RV is an acronym for Recreational Vehicle, as defined in North American English. It refers to an enclosed apparatus that can be used both as a temporary or permanent mobile home and as a vehicle. It is also known as a Motor Home, Motor Caravan, Camping-car, Camper Van and Caravan in other countries.

The history of the RV spans back to the days of World War 1, when Americans started camping in their family cars carrying along tents, cooking facilities and beds. In the 1920s families built simple wooden structures in the shape of houses and added it to a model T chassis. Aircraft-style structuring was used in the RVs of the 1930s and featured dinettes and beds along with electricity and water. During this period RV camping clubs were also born and as the popularity of the RV grew, so did the need for more spacious campgrounds that offered better facilities. At the end of World War 2 the RV manufacturing industry started to thrive. In the 1950s travel trailers came into being, the towable RV we see today.

RVs can be used for many purposes ranging from short leisure outings to long trips, camping journeys and even as a full time living space. All RVs will contain sleeping space, seating, tables, food preparation areas and storage space. Many other additional amenities will be included according to their pricing. There are occasions when RVs are used as movable office spaces. The contents of the RV will then include additional desk space, advanced electrical connections, power supply in the form of a generator and internet facilities.
