An Interview with Dr. Zaheer Rafiq on Root Canal
Dr. Zaheer Rafiq is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Root Canal.
Q. What is root canal treatment?
A. A root canal is needed when the nerve of the tooth is dying or is already dead. It basically is the removal of the nerve, artery and vein that lies inside the center and root of your tooth. Once removed and cleaned it is filled with a plastic filling.
Q. What does treatment involve?
A. Step A. Numb the tooth
B. Isolate the tooth from the saliva using a rubber dam
C. Clean and shape the center and roots of the tooth using small hand files
D. Fill these areas in with gutta percha a plastic filling material
Q. What are the signs of needing endodontic treatment?
A. A. Sensitivity to hot and cold that lingers after the hot and cold stimulus is gone
B. Pain on biting
C. Swelling in the mouth area
It can even be a combination of these symptoms
Q. Are pain pills and antibiotics an acceptable substitute for root canal?
A. No. These just treat the symptoms (temporarily) not the problem!
Q. Are there alternative treatments for root canal?
A. Pull out the tooth!
Q. How much will the procedure cost?
A. Depends on the number of roots the tooth has. Can range from $600-$1200
Q. Will the tooth need any special care or additional treatment?
A. Absolutely. Once the root canal is performed you will need to put a cap(crown) on the tooth. Because the tooth no longer has nutrients coming to it via artery and vein it will get brittle day by day. A crown acts like the straps around a barrel and helps to hold the tooth together. So if you bite on it the wrong way it does not break on you.
Q. How to contact Dr. Rafiq if we have further questions?
A.
