An Interview with Dr. Matt Anderson on Root Canal

Dr. Matt Anderson is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Root Canal.

Q. What is root canal treatment?

A. Root canal treatment is the removal of injured tissue on the inside of a tooth and the canals of the roots.  The inner aspect of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected and filled with a material to keep the tooth from becoming infected.  If the tooth is already infected antibiotics are used to resolve the infection prior to root canal treatment.

Q. What does treatment involve?

A. Treatment starts with giving anesthetic around the tooth.  Once the tooth is "numb" the inner portion of the tooth is accessed through the biting surface of back teeth and the back surface of front teeth.  The canals of the roots are then cleaned out with small round files and irrigated with disinfectant.  The final step is to fill the canals with a material to keep the tooth from becoming infected.

Q. What are the signs of needing endodontic treatment?

A. An early sign of needing root canal treatment is prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold.  Another sign is spontaneous pain or a tooth that needs pain medicine to feel better.  Later signs are pain with biting, or a noticeable swelling, or a pimple on the tissue near the tooth.

Q. Are pain pills and antibiotics an acceptable substitute for root canal?

A. Pain pills and antibiotics will make the tooth feel better for a short period of time.  But, without root canal treatment the pain and/or infection will return, often worse than before.

Q. Are there alternative treatments for root canal?

A. Once the tooth needs root canal treatment the only other treatment is to pull out the tooth.  There are several ways to replace the missing tooth; an implant and a crown, a fixed bridge or a removable partial denture.

Q. How much will the procedure cost?

A. Root canal treatment generally ranges from $500 to $800.

Q. Will the tooth need any special care or additional treatment?

A. Teeth that need root canal treatment generally have had extensive decay or a crack.  Restoring the tooth with a crown is almost always needed.

Q. How to contact Dr. Anderson if we have further questions?
