An Interview with Dr. Rakesh Patel on Porcelain Veneers

Dr. Rakesh Patel is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.

Q. What are porcelain veneers?

A. Porcelain veneers are one of cosmetic dentistry’s more recent developments. These shells of porcelain which are bonded onto the front side of teeth can be an excellent cosmetic solution for teeth that are stained, chipped or slightly misaligned.

Q. How long do dental veneers last?

A. Like most things in the mouth everything has a life span but if veneers are well maintained and free from any excessive forces there is no reason why they cannot last for over a decade.

Q. Do dental veneers require special care?

A. No, Veneers are easy to clean with regular brushing and flossing. We just ask you use your common sense and avoid any excessive force on the veneers.

Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?

A. Yes, bondings and crowns are alternatives. Veneers offer a nice intermediate option. Veneers may be best suited for individuals who want to change the shape, color and do a minor position change. Many times if is only the position and color of the teeth we need to change we can do that just with the invisalign (you can whiten your teeth at the same time as moving your teeth with the invisalign). This is a great long-term non-invasive approach to fixing your smile. Also, please remember that not all patients are suitable for veneers, for example if the teeth are too misplaced or there is not enough natural tooth structure for the veneer to bond to or if the bite is not favorable.

Q. Do Veneers look natural?

A. Absolutely. With the advances in porcelain most people will not even know that you have veneers.

Q. Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?

A. Porcelain itself will not decay but the tooth structure around the veneer is still susceptible to decay without proper hygiene and diet.

Q. What does a veneer cost?

A. Veneer costs can vary but the general cost is about $850 per tooth. Please remember that most insurance companies will see veneers as cosmetic and hence thay will not be a covered benefit.

Q. How to contact Dr. Patel if we have further questions?
