An Interview with Dr. Richard J. Kim on Dental Implants.

Dr. Richard J. Kim is a Dentist and and has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.

Q.  Do my implants need professional cleaning by a dentist or hygienist?

A.  Yes, you do need a professional cleaning. We want the implant gum interface to be as smooth as possible. The thinking goes that if you scale around the implant with a stainless steel instrument, you will undoubtedly scratch the softer titanium surface. These scratches are thought to be a source of further plaque retention.  Most dental offices have special instruments made out of softer plastic material to scale around implants. You do not need additional visit to have implants cleaned but it can be done at your regular 6 month recall visits.

Q.  Are titanium implants worth the cost?

A.  It appears that dental implants are quite costly, the long term benefits are very worth every penny you will spend on them. The cost of dental implants depends on many factors, including the type of implantation, the dentist performing the procedure, the location where the implant placement surgery is performed, the dental implant material used and the amount of dental insurance you have.

Q.  How much does an implant cost as compared to other forms of dentistry?

A.  Single implants may range in cost from $2,500 to $7,000, depending on the aforementioned factors. The cost of full-mouth reconstructive dental implants can range from $24,000 to $100,000.  A 3-unit bridge, another way of replacing a single missing tooth can cost about $2,400 to $3600.

Q.  Is an implant the best substitute for missing teeth?

A.  Dental implants are stronger and more durable than their restorative counterparts (bridges and dentures). Implants offer a permanent solution to tooth loss. Additionally, implants may be used in conjunction with other restorative procedures for maximum effectiveness. For example, a single implant can serve to support a dental crown replacing a single missing tooth. Implants can also be used to support a dental bridge for the replacement of multiple missing teeth, and can be used with dentures to increase stability and reduce gum tissue irritation. We feel that the implant restoration is the best way of restoring a missing teeth if can be done.
