About this article: Do You Have a Computer Career in Your Future?

A career in computers will offer much insight and knowledge to a person who enjoys knowing how a computer works and how they can be integrated to help society.

Do you have a computer career in your future?

Almost all jobs nowadays require a fundamental knowledge in computers. Let it be drafting a business letter or developing the annual budget, everything is done with the aid of computers. Therefore, as a human being living in the 21st century, you should know the basics of how things are done in day to day life using computers.

However, in contrast, a career in computing goes well beyond the typical tasks many of us do with the aid of a computer. It involve in depth knowledge of computing. These are in fact true computing jobs for which you need advanced computer skills. Some of the jobs which fall under this category are Application System Analyst, Client Server Programmer, Network Administrator, Systems Engineer, and Data Architect and so on.

For instance, as more and more computers get networked, the Network Administrator positions are high in demand, which is the case these days and will be more so in the days to come, thanks to the importance of information security. So, if you select a career in computer networking, you may have to prevent computer hackers, virus developers and sometimes even terrorists accessing confidential information of your organization or damaging the information systems. In order to do so, you may need advanced knowledge and skills to be one step ahead from these crooks.

Each of these jobs require thorough understanding of one or sometimes few specialty areas such as Computer Programming, System Development and Design, Computer Networks, Database Administration and so on. However as everything is interrelated you need to understand the fundamentals of the other specialties in order to perform effectively in your specialty.

As a result, if you intend to pursue a career in computing in the future you should have a general understanding of different avenues of computing, while you also focus on one area and become an expert on that chosen field. Remember, it's a balance between these two extremes which really gives you the advantage. In other words, avoid becoming an expert in one area who knows nothing about the other areas and never become an exceptional generalist, who knows bits and pieces about everything yet not many things about a specific field.

So, as a potential IT worker how could you acquire all the skills and knowledge required? You can do so by pursuing a computer science degree, obtaining professional certifications, and most importantly, getting practical exposure through solving real world problems with the use of IT. However, in order to get experience you may need to acquire a job. To qualify for a job, you need a degree or other certifications. Employers might prefer college undergraduate and post graduate degrees. However many of them will also accept experience or certifications.

If you intend to place your future in computing, I would say the best thing will be to get a bachelor's degree by which you get the general understanding of the multi faceted areas of computing. Then from the areas you learn, select an area you really like and learn it in depth to become an expert.

Are you ready for a career in computing? If you are, go ahead, get the necessary qualifications and you will find employers chasing after you to hire you!
