What is the best age to undergo teeth whitening procedures?
Teeth whitening is common and a very popular dental procedure especially in the field of cosmetic dentistry. A child’s teeth are generally white and there is no necessity to whiten them. As the child grows into adulthood, the teeth become dark as the enamel is less porous due to the mineral structure of the teeth. There are other factors that make the teeth discolor.
Bacterial pigments
Colas
Tea
Coffee
Red wine
Nicotine in tobacco
Intake of tetracycline and similar medication
Trauma
Aging
Use of excessive amounts of fluoride
One of the most popular trends among adolescents is teeth whitening. Physical appearance is an important factor especially for teenagers. Peer pressure, marketing gimmicks and TV makeovers are reasons that drive teenagers to make physical improvements which are not always necessary. Teeth whitening are also included in the whole package of physical appearance. Teenagers resort to teeth whitening procedures without thinking of the consequences.
Teeth whitening are generally not recommended for children who are younger than 16 years of age. This is mainly due to the fact that the pulp chamber or the nerve of the tooth is enlarged until this age. If teeth are whitened under this condition, it could irritate the pulp and become sensitive. Teeth whitening are also not recommended for lactating or pregnant women.
Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS) are of the opinion that children below 14 should not whiten their teeth. MDS state that if children below this age whiten their teeth, they would have mismatched, discolored teeth. If teeth are whitened at early stages, permanent teeth will be whitened due to bleaching treatment and the primary teeth will retain its natural color. Permanent teeth take time to fully emerge from the gums. If teeth are whitened at this stage, there will be white teeth only on the surface. A common reaction to whitening are is irritation and sensitivity of the teeth.
Even if it is considered that it is safe for children over 16 years to whiten the teeth, it is imperative to consult a dentist prior to administering any treatment. If there are any undetected dental problems, teeth whitening agents will aggravate the situation. A dentist will be able to carry out a clinical examination to ensure that it is safe to follow a teeth whitening procedure. Whitening teeth before the recommended age and without professional supervision may damage the teeth enamel.
