Q. What is Breast Augmentation?
A. Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure offered to women who would like to enhance their breast size to feel more confident about their appearance and look better in clothing, bathing suit, or in the nude. There are many implant options including both silicone gel filled and saline filled, both of which are equally safe and can produce equally beautiful results. Most important is to select the right sized implant for every patient, and make sure that the implant is not too large for that woman's frame. Also important is to determine if the patient would be best served with her implant above or below the pectoral muscle, and whether or not she might need a breast lift (mastopexy) as well.
Q. How is a breast augmentation surgery performed?
A. Generally the surgery is performed under a light general anesthetic and takes about an hour to an hour and a half.
Q. Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?
A. Any woman who feels that her breast size is smaller than desirable for her frame and proportions.
Q. What type of anesthetic is used for breast augmentation surgery?
A. Usually a light general anesthetic.
Q. What are the risks associated with breast augmentation?
A. As with any surgery there are potential risks of bleeding and infection. Fortunately both are very rare. Implants can sometimes feel as though they harden and that is called a capsular contracture. The implant itself becomes surrounded by a tight scar tissue envelope. Fortunately this is also very uncommon in our hands.
Q. What is the recovery time for breast augmentation?
A. Usually 5-7 days to feel 75% recovered and 10-14 days to feel about 95% recovered.
Q. How much does breast augmentation cost?
A. Prices vary nationally according to region but generally range from about $4,000-$5,000 and up, depending on implant selection and facility where the surgery is to be performed.
