| Dr. Kenneth Dale Macknet, Jr is a Board Certified Dermatologist by the American Board of Dermatology. Here the Doctor has answered some common questions that Bizymoms visitors have about Acne.
Q. How should people with acne protect their skin?
A. People with acne should protect their skin from ultraviolet exposure as others do with sunscreen. Some people see improvement of their acne with sun exposure, however there are consequences to ultraviolet radiation that may take years to manifest and are generally worse than the acne, such as skin cancer or wrinkles.
Q. What type of shaving equipments should be used by men affected by acne?
A. There is a condition common in men called pseudofolliculitis barbae. It looks like acne of the neck and is exacerbated by shaving close. Essentially, the hair is cut off close to or beneath the skin, causing an ingrown hair and subsequent acne-like lesion. It is recommended that men who have this problem shave with a single-blade razor in the direction of the hair and avoid shaving very close so that the hair end is always above the skin. There are special razors that are designed for this problem.
Q. Are there any recommended cosmetics for people with acne?
A. In general, most major brands of cosmetics have been tested not to cause acne. They should carry the label non-acnegenic or non-comedogenic. Acne is contributed to by plugging of the pore. Often times people with acne apply thick layers of makeup to cover the acne, causing the problem to become worse.
Q. Can stress be a cause for acne?
A. Stress if often a factor in acne exacerbation. The high levels of the hormone cortisol cause an increase in sebum production and worsening acne.
