Acne prone skin should be treated with a high level of care using mild cleansers to make sure that the skin is effectively treated without the treatment being too harsh. A common ingredient available in over the counter acne medication is salicylic acid. A Salicylic acid cleanser is a chemical substance derived from natural sources. This is a gentle substance that can be used on the face in low concentrations. This is important as the face has thinner skin which is more delicate that skin on other parts of the body. So a good salicylic acid cleanser should not only be effective, but should also not irritate the skin which would worsen the acne problem even further. Salicylic acid can be used in soaps as well as liquid cleansers. The strength varies from product to product.
Salicylic acid solutions of concentrations as low as 2% have antibacterial properties. Companies market their brand of Salicylic acid cleanser with slightly higher concentrations which depend on the level of exfoliation required.
Concentrated solutions should be handled with an extreme level of care as they can cause deep peeling of the skin. These kinds of solutions should not be used regularly. A salicylic acid treatment twice a month should be alright for normal skin. Leaving on a treatment for too long can even cause a chemical burn.
The difference in concentration makes a huge difference with a weak solution having a mild exfoliating effect and a strong solution even peeling skin layers off. Removal of these outer layers of skin can help by freeing up any plugs that can clog pores. Dislodging of these plugs is a good thing as they can be easily washed away thus clearing up the skin. A high quality cleanser also has other substances that help to sooth the skin.
Salicylic acid is chemically pretty similar to aspirin. It can also be used to treat psoriasis, keratosis, stretch marks etc in addition to acne. The solution treats acne by making the skin cells slide off easily thus protecting pores from clogging up. A good salicylic acid cleanser from a reputed brand can even be used on the hair to eliminate dandruff.
A salicylic acid cleanser is probably the best treatment for anyone who has sensitive skin suffering from an acne problem. The removal of dead skin keeps the surface of the skin clean and the pores open. This also makes the skin seems a bit brighter.
