Hair cleansing and conditioning are much more complicated than the procedure that is followed for skin cleansing. This is because the total surface area that should be cleansed is greater. This is when you include the surfaces of each hair shaft as well as the scalp. Any hair cleanser used to cleanse the hair is called a shampoo. Conditioners make the cleansed hair healthier.
All shampoos contain more or less the same type of ingredient. They have detergents, thickeners, and foaming agents. In addition to these ingredients, there can also be pH buffers, softeners, fragrances as well as preservatives.
The main component in a shampoo that helps remove sebum and dirt from the surface of the scalp is the detergent. This should be carefully done as if too much of the sebum is removed it can leave the hair dull and difficult to comb. Hair is more susceptible to static and this can make the hair brittle. Most consumers prefer hair cleanser products to have plenty of long lasting foam. Too much foam is not really required to keep the hair clean and to facilitate bacteria removal. The more the quantity of detergent used in the shampoo, the more the need of conditioners as well as other substance to combat the damage.
Detergents used in shampoos are also called surfactants. They are both lipophilic and hydrophilic which is a good thing as it allows the hair cleanser to remove any sebum on the scalp. There are a wide range of detergents to choose from. Lauryl sulfates work well in both hard and soft water and help in producing rich foam. This can be a bit hard on the hair. Sarcosines on the other hand are comparatively poor cleansers but are good conditioners. The type of detergent used depends on the user’s hair type. It is always a good idea to have some idea of this and then choose a hair cleanser wisely.
There are many other shampoos for dyes or bleached hair, brittle hair, curly hair etc. These shampoos don’t lather as well though they are excellent at increasing softness and manageability. Baby shampoos use different ingredients that are non-irritating to the eyes. These lather up moderately and leave hair feeling clean and manageable.
Other ingredient such as foaming agents and thickeners don’t have any role in hair cleansing. They are just present to make the hair product look more appealing.
