| Dr. Allison M. Holzapfel is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the American Board of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Facelift.
Q. What is a facelift?
A. A facelift is a procedure used to improve the look of the lower face. As the face ages, many people develop prominent jowls as well as neck laxity. These areas of laxity can lend an elongated look to the face making people appear drawn and tired. A facelift is used to resuspend these areas of droop to their original height. This reduces that vertical aging and restores a more rounded, youthful look. With a facelift, incisions are hidden around the ears and along the hairline. The skin and soft tissues are elevated and a specific layer of fascia, called the SMAS, is tightened with sutures. Tightening this layer leads to a longterm result, usually 7 to 10 years.
Q. What are the benefits of a facelift procedure?
A. Facelifts can really brighten up a patient's face by reducing the folds around the mouth as well as removing the excess skin around the neck.
Q. Are there significant risks associated with facelift surgery?
A. The most common complication of the facelift procedure is a hematoma. These can range from very small, insignificant collections of blood under the skin, to large, painful blood collections. For large hematomas, the treatment is immediate evacuation of the blood. Other risks can include scarring, numbness, and facial nerve damage.
Q. Can I expect permanent results from a facelift?
A. Facelifts usually last 7 to 10 years. Most patients will never return to their previous state of aging, but the amount of lift is not permanent since we do continue to age.
Q. Is there a common technique for facelift procedures?
A. Most trained surgeons will utilize a SMAS lifting technique in which the fascia layer is lifted and secured. Some surgeons, however, may take shortcuts and do only a skin lifting technique. This will not last as long as the SMAS technique and can lead to widened scars.
Q. Is a facelift performed under general anesthesia?
A. Facelifts in our facility are usually performed under "twilight" anesthesia, not general anesthesia.
Q. How do I find a qualified surgeon in my area?
A. Research is the best way to find a surgeon. Definitely get on the internet and search for physicians in the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive surgery. You need to find out if they are board certified and if they have hospital priviliges. If the surgeon operates in their own facility, make sure that facility is AAAHC certified for your own protection.
