An Interview with Dr. Florence Mussat on Mommy Makeover

Dr. Florence Mussat is a plastic surgeon and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Mommy Makeover.

Q. What is a Mommy Makeover?

A. A " Mommy Make-Over " is basically a rejuvenation of a woman's body after she is finished with having children, and breast feeding.

Q. What are the risks and complications associated with a mommy makeover?

A. I usually recommend to stage the procedures, since a shorter surgery will imply less risks, and a quicker recovery towards an active life. Longer and multiple procedures at one time will increase the risks of Deep Vein Thrombosis ( blood clot in the legs ), and infection, on top of a longer, more painful recovery. I also urge all women to stop smoking: on top of increasing surgery complications, it will affect the skin, face, lungs and heart !

Q. I might still have more children. Should I have a Mommy Makeover?

A. Each woman is individual, and our bodies react differently for each pregnancy. We all have different needs we want to address then, with different body parts we wish to correct.

Q. What is the procedure for Mommy Makeover?

A. At the initial consultation, I will spend 1 hr going over the patient's past medical history, allergies etc.. and what are her "problem areas " to her eyes.

I usually ask the patient which is their # 1 concern: Breasts or abdomen. Most women will choose the breast surgery  1 st, with a breast augmentation with or without a lift if necessary. I can perform a liposuction of the mid-section too at max. if necessary, which will add another 1 1/2 hr of procedure time. I use Silicone gel implants in 99 % of the cases, since studies have now shown they are safe, and will not cause diseases and cancers. 1 week off work is usually enough, and no gym for 3 weeks.

3 to 6 months later, once the patient has well recovered, she can schedule a Tummy Tuck, to tighten the Recti muscles and cut off the extra skin in the lower abdomen. a 2 weeks recovery is usual, with no gym for 6 weeks.

Some patients will also desire liposuction with or without an arm lift  If their arms skin is also too loose with fatty deposits. This can be done as a 3 rd procedure later. and as a 4 th procedure, a liposuction of the saddle bag area can also be done, a common problem area for most of us, women.

Now the order of the procedures can be reversed, of course, depending of the patient's concerns.
