An Interview with Dr. Michael J. Lee on Breast Reduction
Dr. Michael J. Lee is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Breast Reduction.
Q. What is breast reduction surgery?
A. A breast reduction is a reduction in the size of the breast as well as lifting of the nipple to a more aesthetic position. If the breasts are extremely large and cause significant symptoms then breast reductions may be covered by insurance.
Q. What are the benefits of breast reduction surgery?
A. The advantages of a reduction are many. It improves back pain, neck pain, and shoulder problems. Moisture build up and rashes can be prevented wtih a reduction. It can make fitting into clothes easier. Women often find it easier to exercise and perform household chores or work related activities. It is a surgery that women tend to be very happy with the results because of the physical and psychological effects of macromastia (very large breasts).
Q. What are the risks involved of breast reduction surgery?
A. There are risks of scarring around the areola, down the breast and underneath the breasts for a large reduction and around the areola and down the breast for smaller reductions. There are risks of nipple sensation changes, infection, asymmetry, wound problems and bleeding. These risks tend to be low, less than 10-15% of the time. In rare case, nipple necrosis can occur but again, this tends to be in extreme cases of size or concommittant medical problems like diabetes, smoking, obesity or radiation to the breast.
Q. What should one expect after breast reduction surgery?
A. The recovery tends to be seven to fourteen days to return to work depending on the physical nature of the job. There are activity restrictions for typically one month.
Q. How much does a breast reduction cost?
A. Breast reduction fees vary and can be covered by insurance depending on the amount of tissue removed. Typical costs range from $6000-8000 for the surgical fees.
