An Interview with Dr. James Platis on Breast Augmentation

Dr. James Platis is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Breast Augmentation

Q. What is breast augmentation? How is a breast augmentation surgery performed?

A. Breast augmentation surgery involves placement of an implant (either saline filled or silicone gel) beneath a woman's breast tissue, and/or chest muscle in order to improve shape and increase size.

Q. Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?

A. Most patients who seek this procedure have either lost some breast tissue after pregnancies, or never developed as much fullness as they would prefer.

Q. What type of anesthetic is used for breast augmentation surgery?

A. The surgery is usually performed under general anesthetic and takes about one hour to perform.

Q. What are the risks associated with breast augmentation?

A. Risks include infection, bleeding, change in sensation, need for revision surgery, and, in the case of saline implants, deflation.  Sometimes patients can develop scar tissue around the implant which makes it feel firm.  This is called capsular contracture, it occurs in 1 - 2% of my patients, and can be removed with revision surgery.

Q. What is the recovery time for breast augmentation?

A. Recovery time for this surgery is usually 4 - 7 days

Q. How much does breast augmentation cost?

A. Costs range from about$5900 - $6900 depending on the type of implant chosen.
