HOME DECORATING Spooky Ways to Decorate Your House for the Trick-or-Treaters ~ Karen
I absolutely love Halloween, and I love crafting. Every Halloween I go all out and decorate for the trick-or-treaters by using easy craft and decorating ideas.
Decorate your entire yard and front door area with the store bought spider webs. They are very inexpensive and are an absolute necessity to give the whole scene the right look. They work well and wrap easily around nooks and crannies of your house. You can wrap them all around bushes and trees. This alone can create the creepy atmosphere.
Near the doorway by some spider webs, create a giant spider orb. To make one, blow up a balloon. Create a paper mache paste by mixing two cups of flour with two cups of water. Dip strips of newspaper in this mixture and completely wrap the balloon in the newspaper strips until it is completely covered. Allow this to dry completely, and then you can pop the balloon that is inside and the newspaper will retain its shape. Spray paint the spider orb white and attach many plastic spiders. This looks very creepy hanging by your front door!
To create another eerie effect, buy some cheese cloth or a very light fabric at the fabric store. Steep some teabags in hot water and use it to stain the cloth to give it an old look. Then, rip the cheesecloth in places and create some holes in it. This fabric looks great on the outside of windows (like creepy curtains) and draping on branches of a tree. They will sway in the breeze they look very haunting.
You can easily create a dummy using regular clothes and some straw or pillows. Grab a pair of jeans, a flannel shirt, a pair of shoes, and some gloves and stuff them with whatever soft things you can find. Use a balloon for the head and place a scary mask over it. Then, place the dummy in a chair in the yard and you instantly have a scary monster. Add a strobe light and you have an instant Halloween scene.
To make another eerie ghost, use a plastic skull and some cheese cloth. Drape the cheese cloth over a regular coat hanger, being careful to cover it completely. Attach the skull to the hook of the coat hanger. Hang the ghost from a tree, and place a black light and a small fan on it. The look is amazing. The cheesecloth ghost sways in the wind from the fan and the black light creates a dramatic glow on the entire ghost.
Homemade tombstones are not hard to make and create a very dramatic scene. They can be made out of wood or heavy Styrofoam. Placing piles of leaves in front of them creates the looks of a fresh grave.
Carve many pumpkins for the special night. Nothing looks better than a cluster of jack-o-lanterns sitting in a row. There are many free downloadable patterns on the internet and with the easy cutting tools they make it is easy for a beginner to create a masterpiece.
Use creative lighting to keep everything a glow when it gets dark. Small strobe lights are inexpensive and it is a good idea to buy a few and keep them in your Halloween box to use every year. They make anything they are pointing on look spookier! A few spot lights here and there work great too. Just make sure to tape down extension cords so no one trips.
The things you make or buy can be stored carefully in plastic tubs so you can use it year after year. Have fun this Halloween!
