| How to Care for Your Tooth Which Has Been Left Open To Drain Chattanooga |
How to care for your tooth which has been open to drain?
If you have an abscessed tooth, the dentist will prescribe antibiotics to kill the bacteria causing the infection. This might control the infection for a while but to get rid of the abscess, it will be necessary to get rid of the cause of the infection. This is done by making a hole in the gum or the tooth to drain the infection which will relieve the pain.
If the problem is much worse and the inside of the tooth is infected, then a root canal is necessary to save the tooth by removing the infected pulp. The other alternative is to remove the tooth. This should be the last resort and as much as possible you should try to save your tooth.
The pain and infection will be reduced if the abscess is left open to drain. However, it is necessary to care of your tooth thereafter.
1. Add a tea spoon of salt to a glass of warm water and irrigate your mouth after every meal or snack or it is better if you could do this every hour that you are awake. Salt water is an anti-bacterial agent.
2. Eat cautiously from the opposite side of the mouth to ensure that food particles do not get stuck in the open area.
3. Avoid eating hard and sticky food.
4. Avoid food that contains seeds as it could accidentally get stuck in the open area.
5. Do not use toothpicks or similar objects to remove food particles.
6. Do not use straws when you are drinking as suction will disturb the open area.
7. Medication should be taken according to prescription. If antibiotics have been prescribed, complete the course of medication even if symptoms of infection are no longer evident.
8. Do not take medication on an empty stomach unless your dentist or endodontist has requested you to do so. If you do, the chances are that you will throw out or have a stomach pain
9. If the temperature rises more than 101°C you must inform your Dentist or Endodontist. For temperature that range from normal to 101°C you can take Aspirin or Tylenol
10. Inform your Dentist or Endodontist if there is unusual swelling in the gums.
11. Eat a balanced diet. You need nutrition for healing.
Six months later dental x-rays should be taken to confirm that the bone and tissue are filling the area of the abscess. If the bone has not been filled, it will be necessary for you to visit an Endodontist to surgically remove the abscess.
