An Interview with Dr. Desiree A Bagheri on Dental Implants

Dr. Desiree A Bagheri is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.

Q. What are dental implants?

A. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots placed in the jaw to replace single or multiple teeth.

Q. What are the benefits of dental implants?

A. If you lose a tooth or multiple teeth, dental impants are the closest thing to the look, feel, and function of your natural teeth.

Q. How long does an implant last?

A. Long term success rate of dental implants can vary.  The overall success rate in natural bone is 95%.  This falls to between 85-90% in grafted bone. Of course, patient habits and compliance affect the success rate.  Smoking and poor hygiene habits can reduce overall success rates.

Q. What are implants made of?

A. A typical implant consists of a titanium screw which serves as the "root" of the tooth.  Titanium has been very effective at fusing with bone (osseointegration).

Q. Who is a candidate for implants?

A. The ideal candidate for a dental implant is in good general and oral health. Adequate bone in your jaw is needed to support the implant.  Your dentist can help determine this.

Q. How are dental implants placed?

A. Dental implants are generally placed in 2 phases:
1. Surgical placement of titanium post into bone to serve as the "root" foundation
2. Creating and attaching a new tooth or teeth to the anchored implant.  This can be in the form of crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Q. How long does it take?

A. The timing of the above phases can vary from one case to another.  Generally speaking, it may take from 2-4 months to get the final restorations.  These times may be significantly shorter or longer, depending on the situation and circumstances.

Q. How to contact Dr. Bagheri if we have further questions?
