132,000 students belong to public school system of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) which comprise 161 elementary, middle and high schools. CMS is one of the four school districts in the nation to be recognized for improving academic achievement. An average of $7,045 is spent annually for a student by the school district.
