An interview with Dr. William Crutchfield on Braces

Dr. William Crutchfield is an Orthodontist who has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about  Braces

Q. Can one be too old for treatment?

A. There is not an age that is "too old" for treatment.  In fact we have treated many patients in their 70’s.  As long as the supporting structures of the teeth are healthy, a person can have orthodontic treatment.  A significant portion of our practice is adult orthodontics and adult treatment is becoming more and more popular and mainstream.

Q. How much do braces cost?

A. The cost for orthodontic treatment varies depending on what is to be done and the extent of the correction.  The average complete orthodontic treatment is usually in the $6000-7000 range.

Q. When will one be able to see changes in his/her teeth after the braces are put on?

A. A patient will begin to see changes within a few days after placing the braces.

Q. Will one need to have teeth extracted?

A. We generally try to use the latest techniques to prevent having to extract teeth.  However, sometimes in orthodontic treatment it is necessary to remove teeth.  Teeth are removed for basically three reasons. One, to create space for an overly crowded situation.  Two, to provide space to reduce severe protrusion of the front teeth.  And three, to compensate for a jaw discrepancy issue.

Q. How long will it take to complete the treatment?

A. Orthodontic treatment time varies on many factors like the severity of the situation, whether the patient is growing or not, patient cooperation, etc.  For the average, full orthodontic treatment, we like to be finished with treatment in 18-24 months.

Q. Can a person wear braces even though that person has many crowns and missing teeth?

A. Absolutely.  In fact, proper orthodontic alignment of the teeth will provide the optimum position for replacing missing teeth.

Q. How can I prevent my child from being embarrassed wearing braces?

A. Believe it or not, most children are eager to get braces because they are "cool".  But, if a child is embarrassed, studies show that the embarrassment goes away in a couple of weeks.

Q. How to contact Dr. Crutchfield if we have further questions?
