An Interview with Dr. Robert Marouk on Liposuction

Dr. Robert Marouk is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Liposuction.

Q. What is Liposuction?

A.
•    Liposuction surgery is the actual removal of fat cells (fat deposits) from an unwanted area of the body. It is used for body contouring and is not a solution for obesity.

Q. Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

A. Anyone who is the following:

•    Good health
•    Have tried to diet and exercise to eliminate bulges
•    Have certain areas causing them distress that are disproportionate to the rest of their bodies
•    Slightly to moderately overweight
•    Has Realistic expectations
•    Mind set, need to follow after care instructions and know that liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss.

Q. What are the risks associated with liposuction surgery?

A.
•    Swelling and bruising
•    Infection
•    Bleeding/hematoma
•    Bad scars
•    Numbness/itching
•    Irregularities in skin surface
•    Persistent swelling
•    Blood loss
•    Pain

Q. What technique will the surgeon use to perform the liposuction?

A. Dr.Marouk does all of the following:
•    There are several types of liposuction procedures available: All of which use a wand-like instrument called a cannula to remove unwanted fat.
•    Tumescent liposuction involves the injection of a large amount of anesthetic into the area being treated then the fat cells are "vacuumed" out of the body by suction.
•    Ultrasonic assisted liposuction sound waves are used to liquefy the fat before it is removed.
•    Power assisted liposuction uses a motor powered cannula which allows the surgeon to use smaller movements.

Q. How long is the recovery period?

A.
•    You will go home right after your procedure and rest for the evening after that you may gradually increase your activity as tolerated.
•    After 2 – 5 days you may resume normal activities but may notice you get tired more easily.
•    You will be wearing a snug elastic girdle or body suit over the treated area for 7 – 10 days.
•    Swelling can take up to 12 weeks to dissipate
•    You will notice a change each week as the swelling goes down. We tell patients not to buy new clothes until at least 3 months after surgery to see their true result.

Q. Are the results permanent?

A.
•    Yes, liposuction permanently removes fat cells to improve your body’s shape.
•    If you do gain weight after surgery the remaining fat cells in your body will expand. This can cause irregularities in the skin’s surface.
•    To keep your results looking beautiful, we recommend the patient maintain a healthy diet and get plenty of exercise.

Q. How much does liposuction cost?

 A.
•    Depending on how many areas the patient is doing at one time, generally the cost is based on the amount of time spent in the operating room. We can be more flexible on price depending on time needed.
•    Average range $2500 to $7500 again depending on areas and size of patient. Many financing options are available.  Most health insurances will not cover liposuction.
