Is Virtual Assistant Certification really necessary?

In any business, there is usually no entry barrier with regard to qualifications. However, for rendering professional services, in many cases certifications are mandatory, while in other situations such as virtual assistant services, a certification may be recommended though not compulsory.

Virtual Assistant Certification firstly benefits the recipient in the sense that any qualification and knowledge can never hurt you, rather it can only add some more value to your existing set of skills and knowledge. Furthermore, a certification sets a benchmark on the basis of which a client may be able to choose a service provider of his choice. Usually, a certified service provider will get a natural preference from the client, all other considerations remaining the same.

There are basically two schools of thought on this matter, and both have their own valid logic. One school believes that a remote service provider who is usually a work at home operator managing a home-based business, need not possess any special certification. It says that such a certification is only a formality where as the real test of a person lies in his performance, dedication and ability to deliver results to the client’s satisfaction.

But there is another school of thought that does recommend a certification for virtual assistant business. It believes that a certification will add more professionalism to the entire business, and give it a status of professional legitimacy. At the same time, a good certificate program will be able to give a meaningful orientation to the service providers and inculcate a sense of ethics and responsibilities related to this business.

Certifications in this line are also of various types, ranging from preliminary to advanced levels. Serious professionals prefer to go for the higher certification courses. Generally, such certifications can be obtained through online courses so that an entrepreneur does not need to compromise the valuable time from his work, and can acquire the certification by studying in his free hours.

Therefore, even though there is no state regulation to acquire certification, but it may be useful to get one while starting the business or during the course of business. In conclusion, it is essentially a matter of personal choice whether an entrepreneur should go for a virtual assistant certification or ignore it as an unnecessary burden that does not help the business in any way. It also depends upon case to case, as some clients may attach importance to such certifications, while others may only look at the performance record and experience of the virtual assistant.
