The effect of stroke can change a person’s lifestyle totally. Rehabilitation is a critical part of recovery and adjusting to the new ways of doing things can sometimes be demoralizing for a person. Being more sensitive towards the feelings of the patients and being there for them will make them feel loved and wanted. It is important that they are not made to feel inadequate and incapable, whilst closely monitoring and keeping an eye on them, making them feel independent will help them to adjust into the new role quickly. Encouraging the stroke survivor to talk will help in getting the thoughts and emotions out. It is important that the caregiver is patient, and is able to motivate the survivor to talk about his feelings. However hard it may be, teaching them to be independent even at a time when they struggle to do the work, will on the long run be very helpful and will help the survivor immensely to cope with the situation and recover more quickly.
With rehabilitation the strength, confidence and capabilities are built. Depending on the extent the person has suffered a stroke, he will be taught how to manage and handle the functions that has suffered due to stroke. Rehabilitation does not reverse the effect of stroke but helps restoring the survivor to optimal health. With modern techniques there is more hope than before for both stroke treatment and rehabilitation. Family members are also made aware of the disabilities and impairments due to stroke, and they along with the medical team and the rehabilitation team should work together to help the person get out of the plight and status he is in, the best and quickest way possible.
Rehabilitation medicine will be given depending on each individual, thus, each program will be different. General treatment for rehabilitation programs are the following:
Attending to the disease to avoid further complications
Treating the disability
Improving areas that has suffered as a result of stroke
Providing materials and tools necessary to adjust into the new life style
Changing the environment and layout.
Teaching the stroke survivor the new life style changes.
Majority of stroke survivors need help in the daily activities. A caregiver treating them with love and affection, and understanding the state they are in, will help the survivor to face the new challenges in life. There will be frustration when their need is not met, and also the feeling being dependant on another person will make them will emotionally very low, though it may be difficult and tough for them, you as the caregiver can make a world of a difference in their lives.
