Risk of heart disease can be reduced by adopting an active lifestyle and doing regular physical exercise. Even those who are already suffering from heart ailments, can do milder forms of exercise to maintain or improve their heart condition. An inactive and sedentary lifestyle is the biggest enemy of a healthy heart.

Aerobic exercises deliver the maximum benefit by regulating the heart rate and reducing the cholesterol levels in the blood.

Improved supply of oxygen to all body organs.

Increases the HDL levels in the body, which is good for heart.

Improves the stamina and general state of activity.

Regularizes breathing.

Makes the heart muscles stronger.

Reduces fats from the blood.

Helps to control stress, anxiety, depression and nervousness.

Types of physical exercises

Depending upon the person’s general health condition, age factor, and condition of the heart, there are different exercises that can help to improve the health of the heart.

We can categorize heart-healthy exercises into three kinds:

Muscle stretching exercises: For the beginners, as well as for patients who are new to physical exercise regimen, it is recommended that they start just by stretching their arms and legs as much as possible. It will tone up the muscles, improve their flexibility, and prepare the body for more vigorous exercise later.

Aerobic exercises: These are the best exercises for improving cardio-vascular strength. It involves continuous and vigorous physical activity with an increased heart rate. That improves the heart muscles over a period of time, and makes maximum utilization of oxygen in the body. It regularizes heartbeats and helps to lower the blood pressure in the arteries.

Strengthening exercises: These exercises are designed to improve the muscular strength of the heart. It includes continuous muscular contractions until the muscles become fatigued.

Duration of exercise

Physical exercises are beneficial if they are done with regularity, over a prolonged period of time. It does not provide instant benefits to the heart, but over an extended period, the benefits of exercise are visible. Ideally, a person should do aerobic exercises at least five days in a week, for the duration of minimum 30 minutes a day.

Stages of exercise

A good exercise session will include the warm-up stage, where the body is gradually prepared for vigorous exercise. Thereafter, the vigorous conditioning exercises are performed while the body has the capacity for it. Once the body stamina is nearly exhausted, the exercise must include the cool-down phase where again gradually the body is brought back from the vigorous state to the normal state.
