Heart Disease medications:Controling Cholestrol Levels

Your doctor, friends and family would often tell you to ‘keep an eye on those Cholesterol levels’. Why do you think everybody stresses so much on Cholesterol levels? The main reason is because it is a key cause of heart disease today. Yes, many fatal, untimely deaths occurring today trace back to high Cholesterol levels. So everybody talks about it, warns about it, fears it and preaches about it!

With everybody you know giving you warnings and advice on watching your diet, maintaining your weight and carrying out workout sessions, sometimes it might feel like such a pain. But remember why they stress on it so much, because they care about you and want you to live a healthy life. So make an effort to take their advice to heart and keep an eye on your cholesterol levels.

How do we do that? Keep an eye on our Cholesterol levels, I mean. The important point to remember here is that high Cholesterol conditions have no or very little symptoms. So most of the time, we wouldn’t even know it if our Cholesterol levels overtake the optimum levels. Because of that, it is important for us to go in for regular health examinations. Doctors suggest that an average healthy adult go in for a regular checkup which includes a Cholesterol blood test at least every five years. It is advisable to do a lipid profile and check the cholesterol once in every 6 months.

Practicing good habits such as a balanced diet plan, regular exercise, watching your weight and avoiding stress will also help maintain your cholesterol levels. Also avoid bad habits such as smoking and alcoholism, in order to avoid reaching risk levels.

In America, every year over one million heart attacks occur according to reports, out of which half a million people die from the condition. Researchers have discovered that high cholesterol levels are the key cause behind a majority of these cases.

How does high cholesterol affect your heart? Excess cholesterol builds up in your blood vessels, and over time your arteries start to thin out due to these depositions. Thus blood flow to the heart reduces, making your heart pump harder. This condition eventually leads to heart disease and if blood supply gets completely blocked, a heart attack occurs.

You might say I am not obese, nor do I fall ill easy, my heart is in good condition (especially if you are young and active) and ignore all warnings from friends and family on ‘watching your blood cholesterol’. It’s not a wise thing to do. Many healthy individuals are reported to suffer from high cholesterol, even though they appear healthy and strong. You might even practice good eating habits and avoid smoking and regular alcohol use. Still there is a chance for your blood cholesterol to increase. If you have a stressful work-life and very less physical exercise, they too can lead to high cholesterol levels. Sometimes other unknown factors are known to cause high cholesterol.

So keep it in mind today and follow recommended doctors’ advice. Go in for regular health checkups, so you know where you stand with respect to your blood cholesterol. Make it a point to maintain your levels within the optimal threshold, and you can avoid heart disease and live a healthy life.
