Breast Cancer Story
Mel Majoros is a two-year breast cancer survivor. She is a ten-year veteran of the television postproduction industry. She worked on shows such as "Walker, Texas Ranger" and "Crossing Jordan."  Currently she is the producer/co-host of "The Vic McCarty Radio Show" broadcasting live from 10am to noon Eastern on wmktthetalkstation.com, as well as the host of "The Cancer Warrior" on Empoweradio.com.

1. What inspired you to start your own radio show ‘Cancer Warrior?’ How does it raise awareness?

I was a producer for Empoweradio.com, the station was in a retooling phase and asked me if I would want to do a show. I jumped at the chance because I thought I if could find inspiring survivors to share their story, that would help others.

2. What contribution has your blog made to your objective of raising breast
cancer awareness?

Well, I didn't know anything about breast cancer before I had the disease. I have gotten great feedback from survivors and caregivers, especially about side effects and survivorship. I get great responses from survivors who are going through similar experiences and sometimes don't realize that, for example, insomnia is a side effect of cancer. My blog started out as being a cathartic release for me, and thankfully it has helped a few people on the way.

3. Why is raising breast cancer awareness so important to you?

Because I don't want others to go through what I have been through. Knowing that someday no one will hear those words, "It's cancer" would be fantastic.

4. How has your experience of being diagnosed with breast cancer helped you
to reach out to people?

In addition to the cancer warrior podcast, I am also a producer/co-host of a local talk show. When I was first diagnosed I didn't even want to talk about it. Now, just try to stop me from talking about it!

5. What did you first feel when you learned of your diagnosis of breast
cancer?

I was shocked!! I was 37 and in excellent physical shape. The doctor who did the biopsy told me he has been doing this for 25 years and has only been surprised by a handful of diagnoses, and mine was one of them.

6. What can women do to avoid breast cancer or find out before it’s too
late?

Find out if you have a history of breast cancer in your family. Do your breast self-exams and talk to your doctor. Be your own advocate; ask questions. No question should be too embarrassing to ask.

7. As you have successfully fought and defeated breast cancer, what tips
and helpful advice would you give to women who are battling breast cancer?

Have a good support system; your friends, family, doctors, even a therapist.  There are also great information available online. One of the most important things is having a positive mental attitude, and maintaining your sense of humor.
