Surviving Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer has been a big problem for women, since more and more new cases of the disease are reported every year, and due to the fatality and seriousness of this disease, it has been ranked as the second leading cause of cancer deaths among females.

Just as there are new cases of breast cancer each year, there are others who manage to prevent it. There is another set that suffer from breast cancer and survive with the medication given to them, and live longer than expected. Everybody in this world wants to be healthy, without any illnesses, and similarly, breast cancer victims too want to fight, cure or at least survive this deadly disease.

How can one survive breast cancer? The sooner you detect and treat the cancer, the higher the chances of the victim’s survival. It has been found that the number of breast cancer survivors have been higher in recent years, not because of the better treatment available, but because the lumps or tumors were smaller in size. This is the reason why doctors suggest that regular mammograms be done so that if any cancerous cells and/or tumors exist, they can be detected earlier and treated, so that the chances of prevention and cure are high.

Similarly, the chances of long-term survival will increase if the victim takes a mixture of chemotherapy drugs after surgery, for localized breast cancer. Doctors recommend that three to six months of treatment along with the use of a few or more chemotherapy drugs, improves the conditions of the patient and therefore, chances of survival. Those victims whose cancer has not spread to their lymph nodes too would benefit with the additional chemotherapy treatment.

It has also been found that women who were diagnosed with breast cancer in their early 40s stand a better chance of survival (long-term) when compared to women who acquire it in their 20s or 30s. This may partly be due to the psychological effect, since if young women are diagnosed with breast cancer, they will have social issues as well as problems in their personal relationships. In other words, the reason for this can be due to the level of mental strength a woman possesses and the support they receive to fight the disease. Therefore, another significant factor of survival is the age of the victim at diagnosis/ prognosis.

It has also been found that the collective use of chemotherapy along with hormone therapy increases the chances for long-term survival of the victim. With this being the case, doctors have changed breast cancer treatment from chemotherapy alone to a combination of chemotherapy and hormonal treatment. In addition, research shows that female breast cancer patients could enjoy a long life with the removal of their ovaries.

One could survive the negative effects of breast cancer by the proper intake of healthy food. Recommended are foods with monounsaturated fats, and not polyunsaturated fats. The more appropriate and organized your diet is, the better the chances of survival.
