Breast Cancer Prevention

Do you know what the second leading cause of female cancer death is? Yes, it is Breast Cancer! It is listed as one of the deadliest forms of cancer. According to reports from the American Cancer Society, over 170,000 new cases of breast cancers occur every year, which is indeed a huge amount.

Due to this factor, most females seek out ways of prevent breast cancer and there are several precautionary actions you can take to avoid breast cancer.

Eat healthy food
By eating healthy food one could avoid becoming obese. Obesity is a huge problem in today’s society and is also believed to increase the risk of breast cancer. Hence the intake of healthy food would help avoid becoming overweight, thus eventually preventing the risk of breast cancer.

It is suggested that food items such as whole grain, fruits, nuts, beans and food rich with antioxidants help reduce the risk of breast cancer. In addition, monounsaturated fats like olive oil and canola oil are also known to be good. Green tea and Vitamins E and C are also recommended.

Regular Exercising or Physical Activity
It has been proved by research studies that women who exercise frequently or engage in physical activity are less likely to contract breast cancer. It is suggested that one should devote at least 30 minutes to an hour per day for exercising.   This would also help one to maintain their weight, further reducing the likelihood of acquiring breast cancer.

Limiting or Stopping the use of Alcohol and Cigarettes
The higher the consumption of liquor and/or the more you smoke, the more you are at risk of contracting breast cancer. So, doctors suggest that your regular liquor intake be limited or stopped.

Reducing the use of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
The routine use of HRT is supposed to increase the risk of breast cancer. Hence it is better avoided or limited.

Chemoprevention
Chemoprevention refers to the use of drugs to reduce the risk of disease. The use of drugs such as Tamoxifen and Raloxifene is believed to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Prophylactic Surgery
Prophylactic mastectomy, also known as Preventive mastectomy, is the surgical removal of one or both breasts before breast cancer has been discovered. Some women choose to do this (and then later get their breasts reconstructed) due to the fear of contracting cancer, mainly because their family have a strong history of breast cancer.

Frequent check-ups
Frequent check-ups, such as mammograms (at least once a month) or breast self-exams would help one recognize any signs of deformity in the breast region (detection of lumps). By early detection, one could get the necessary treatment to avoid the risk of spreading the cancer.

Sleep in the dark
It has been found out that those who are exposed to light at night are more susceptible to breast cancer. So you better make it a habit to sleep in the dark!

These precautionary actions would help prevent or reduce the risk of breast cancer and help you live a happy and healthy life.
