What is the benefit of using a Business Plan?

It is a common perception in the minds of many businessmen that a business plan is only necessary for getting financing. However, this is not the case at all. Putting together a business plan allows you to stroll through many aspects of your business’ future and helps you to have ready answers when needed. In other words, your business plan is your roadmap to success.

Running or starting a business without a business plan is like walking through the dark without a flashlight. You can probably go a long way using just your senses and relying on basic instincts. But operating in such a manner leaves you wide open to the risk that something will get in your way (like a competitor) and you probably won't see it until it is too late. And just imagine all of the opportunities that are just waiting to be grasped - but without a business plan, how will you see and take advantage of them? And it is very vital that you understand that what will make you successful and stand you apart from the crowd is recognizing opportunities and capitalizing on them.

So let’s take a peek at the main benefits of a business plan.

Vision Statement. This component of your plan expresses your beliefs and values for your company. For example, Martin Luther King had a definite vision in mind when he said, "I have a dream." That statement changed the nation and will continue to change many generations to come. So your vision statement is your dream for your business.

Expansions and improvements. This module will allow you to think and plan ahead. For example, as you run your business with a basic target market you will identify that you have the ability and the willingness to tap into a much broader market than what you have now.

Competitive evaluation. This part of your business guide allows you to take a look at other companies (competitors) in your area to see how they operate and what problems they could pose for you and your company.

Market analysis. This is the most important part of your business guide and most likely will require the most time and research. However, done completely, you will get a close-up view of the overall market and any changes that have occurred. Research done well will allow you to find your target market and determine its size and shape.

It is not a must to hire someone to draft a business plan, unless you want to. Sometimes doing the writing and research yourself will uncover hidden gems that you would have missed by having someone else do the work. However, if time is an issue, by all means hire a professional to do the research and prepare a written plan for you.
