An Interview with Dr. Frederic Corbin on Breast Lifting
Dr. Frederic Corbin is a plastic surgeon and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Breast Lifting.
Q. What is Breast Lifting?
A. Specifically a breast lift or mastopexy is a procedure to restore the breast and areola back to a more youthful attractive position after weight loss, pregnancy or unfortunate development.
Q. How is breast lift surgery done?
A. The actual procedure performed may vary due to the degree of drooping or ptosis of the breast and with it the amount of scarring associated with the procedure.
Q. What is the recovery period like?
A. All wounds heal at the same rate and incisions are not back to normal strength until 6 weeks following surgery assuming no complications. A woman can get back to more normal activities sooner than 6 weeks assuming she uses discretion in what she is doing. Obviously I would specifically discuss those activities with the patient based upon the type of mastopexy performed. Interestingly the amount of discomfort or pain associated with a mastopexy alone is generally less than that associated with an augmentation.
Q. Who is an ideal candidate for breast lift surgery?
A. A woman is a candidate or would benefit from the procedure if her areola is below the natural crease (inframammary fold) of the breast and the procedure performed would vary based upon how far below the crease the areola is.
Q. Are there risks and complications to a breast lift surgery?
A. As to risks they include bleeding, infection, scarring, changes in sensation and possible loss of the ability to breast feed. Obviously too there are those risks associated with general anesthesia though they are extremely rare.
Q. How long do the results last?
A. The results last forever but there may be changes associated with aging, weight gain or loss and further pregnancies. Certainly it would be very usual for the areola to fall again as low as it was prior to surgery though breast tissue might droop again or "bottom out."
Q. How much does breast lift surgery cost?
A. Obviously the cost of the procedure would vary based upon the type of Mastopexy performed (amount of time required) and whether it was associated with the use of breast implants.
