An Interview with Dr. Lori Ann Kemmet on TMJ
Dr. Lori Ann Kemmet is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about TMJ.
Q. What is TMJ?
A. TMJ is correctly termed TMD - it means Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction. TMD is usually the result from overuse of the joint but can also result from injury, arthritis, and anatomical defects.
Q. How do I know if I have TMJ?
A. People with TMD often have early signs of noise (clicking, popping, grinding) in one or both joints. More advanced forms of TMD will produce headaches, neck aches, should pain, migraines, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), seeing stars, loss of hearing, balance problems, and even nausea.
Q. Can pain killers help in treating TMJ syndrome?
A. Pain Killers are a temporary band aid for TMD.
Q. Who should treat TMD?
A. Treating TMD depends on the severity of the signs and symptoms. Sometimes it is necessary to have a multidisciplinary approach to treatment and involve several health care professionals. Often TMD can be helped by seeing a dentist.
Q. What should you expect from a TMD doctor?
A. There is no specialty within the dental profession. However, there are dentists who have advanced training in the area of TMD. Someone seeking the services of a dentist trained in this area should expect a full discussion of the symptoms. A full examination including x-rays, exam with palpation to the muscles of mastication and a discussion about the severity of the TMD. There are often restorative solutions that are offered. These solutions can offer temporary or permanent relief.
Q. What results can I expect from surgery?
A. Surgery is not my area of expertise and I don't feel comfortable answering this question. Many people have had successful outcomes with surgery.
Q. Is TMJ/TMD covered by insurance?
A. Rarely is TMD covered by insurance.
Q. How to contact Dr. Kemmet if we have further questions?
