An Interview with Dr. Eric P. Weller on Porcelain Veneers

Dr. Eric P. Weller is a dentist and has answered some of the most common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.

Q. How long to dental veneers last?

A. Some last forever, some may chip or the natural tooth may decay around the margins of the restoration. It is impossible to predict how long a restoration will last, but you should expect to get at least 10 years of service; hopefully a lifetime.

Q. Do dental veneers require special care?

A. Yes. Veneers are made of porcelain which is not as strong as your natural tooth structure; similar, but unfortunately, less resilient. Be careful not to bite down on a fork, hit them with a bottle or glass. Don’t use them to tear open a package or cut a piece of thread. They are an investment, be careful with them, but they will easily hold up to daily life.

Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?

A. Braces, bleaching or composite bonding (not recommended).

Q. Do veneers look natural?

A. Very. Usually better (more ideal) than your natural teeth.

Q. Does the veneer protect the tooth from decay?

A. No. If anything, you need to be more diligent about the care of your teeth. Placing a veneer involved removing a very small (about 1mm) of tooth structure from the facial surface of the tooth. The areas of the tooth where the veneer meets the tooth is called a margin, and while properly done veneers will have virtually no discernable transition between veneer and tooth, microscopically this is the weakest area with regard to recurrent decay. Floss, floss, floss.

Q. What does a veneer cost?

A. The cost varies from office to office. Our cost is $1,500 per tooth.
