An Interview with Dr. Dennis Orgill on Rhinoplasty
Dr. Dennis Orgill is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Rhinoplasty.
Q. What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is an operation to re-shape the nose.
Q. What are the benefits of rhinoplasty?
The primary benefit of rhinoplasty is an improved aesthetic or cosmetic appearance. Some patients can have difficulty in breathing that can be corrected at the same time using other procedures such as septoplasty.
Q. What are the risks associated with rhinoplasty?
With any surgical procedure, there are risks of anesthesia, bleeding or infection, but these are low in rhinoplasties. Other risks can include nasal collapse, difficult breathing, or septal perforation. The most common issue with rhinoplasties is making sure that the end result of the operation meets the patient's expectations. There are certain limitations in each case about how much of a change can be safely accomplished. It is good for patients to discuss with their surgeon their expectations on more than one occasion prior to the surgery.
Q. What does a rhinoplasty procedure involve?
Rhinoplasty involve re-shaping the nose by trimming, re-shaping or adding cartilage and bone. This involves making small incisions inside the nose and using a variety of tools to reshape the structure. Sometimes, small incisions made on the outside of the nose can allow a better exposure to the nasal skeletal structures.
Q. How long does it take to recover from rhinoplasty?
The nose becomes swollen after rhinoplasty. Often the nose will be covered with a splint for several days. Typically patients will take several days off of work. If the bones are broken, there will be black and blue marks around the eyes for about 2 weeks. Although most of the swelling will be gone after 2 weeks, there can be changes out to a year after the procedure.
Q. How long can one expect the results to last?
Generally, results from rhinoplasty are long lasting. There still will be the natural effects of aging that occur, but the basic shape of the nose is usually stable for many years.
Q. How does one locate an experienced surgeon in my area?
The American Board of Plastic Surgeon maintains a list of surgeons certified in Plastic Surgery. Primary care physician, local hospitals or acquaintances that work in health care can also be helpful in making recommendations.
