An Interview with Dr. Helaine Smith on Tooth Whitening

Dr. Helaine Smith is a dentist and has answered some common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Tooth Whitening.

Q. What is tooth whitening?

A. Tooth whitening oxidizes the enamel which is an inorganic crystalline structure using hydrogen peroxide or an over the counter formula of carbamide peroxide.

Q.  Who may benefit from tooth whitening?

A. Anyone who does not have crowns or large amounts of decay.

Q.  Who are not recommended to undergo tooth whitening?

A. People who are claustrophobic or have not had a teeth cleaning in over a year.

Q.  What does tooth whitening involve?

A. An in office treatment consists of isolating your lips and gums and applying hydrogen peroxide gel to your teeth. A blue light moved close to your teeth to help oxidize the peroxide. You will have the gel on your teeth for about 60 minutes. You are supervised and checked throughout as the gel is reapplied every fifteen minutes.

Q.  How long does this take?

A. 90 minutes total

Q.  How much does tooth whitening cost?

A. 400 dollars

Q.  What are the side effects?

A. Almost everyone has teeth sensitivity for 24 hours to cold and might experience some discomfort immediately after the treatment. It always resolves as the teeth become hydrated with saliva. Tooth whitening is very safe and does not cause any permanent problems.
