An Interview with Dr. Kenneth A. Malament on Dentures
Dr. Kenneth A. Malament is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dentures.
Q. What are dentures? What types of cosmetic dentures are possible?
A. Dentures are artificial substitutes for missing teeth and treatment plan options are customized for each patient depending on what is appropriate for that patient. "Dentures" is a very broad term and includes subcategories of both Complete and Removable Dentures and included both removable (without dental implants) and fixed (with dental implants.) All of these options are made as esthetic as possible and patients do not need to request "cosmetic" dental work as highly esthetic dentistry is always our goal.
Q. Why should I use a denture adhesive?
A. Denture adhesive can be used to enhance retention of removable dentures particularly on lower dentures. In many cases patients use adhesive when it may be more appropriate to remake the dentures or consider enhancing their retention with dental implants.
Q. How long do cosmetic dentures take to make? What are the alternatives to cosmetic dentures?
A. Treatment time varies depending on whether dental implants are included in treatment and depending if teeth need to be extracted as healing time is involved in both circumstances. A straightforward replacement set of complete dentures takes approximately 3 months however a fixed (non-removable) implant retained situation can take over a year due to healing time and laboratory time.
Q. Are dentures uncomfortable or painful to wear?
A. Both removable and non-removable complete dentures generally require a few adjustments before the patient is comfortable.
Q. What’s the difference between conventional dentures and immediate dentures?
A. "Conventional dentures" are made for a patient who is already missing all of their teeth. "Immediate Dentures" are made for a patient who has teeth removed and the same day needs a denture place. Due to changes in tissue and bone form after dental extractions we always recommend that "Conventional dentures" be made 3-6 months after "Immediate Dentures" are made.
Q. How to contact Dr. Malament if we have further questions?
