Advantages

June 16th, 2008

These are the advantages of a franchise business I came across in various sources:

    • Your business is based on a proven idea. You can check how successful other franchises are before committing yourself.
    • You can use a recognized brand name and trademarks. You benefit from any advertising or promotion by the owner of the franchise - the “franchisor”.
    • The franchiser gives you support - usually including training, help setting up the business, a manual telling you how to run the business and ongoing advice.
    • You usually have exclusive rights in your territory. The franchisor won’t sell any other franchises in the same region.
    • Financing the business may be easier. Banks are sometimes more likely to lend money to buy a franchise with a good reputation.
    • Risk is reduced and is shared by the franchiser.
    • If you have an existing customer base you will not have to invest time looking to set one up.
    • Relationships with suppliers have already been established.
    • The Franchisee will usually need less capital than they would if they were setting up a business independently because the Franchiser, through their pilot operations and buying power, will have eliminated unnecessary expense.
    • Be your own boss (at least to a point) as appose to working for an employer. Franchises offer you the chance to go into business yourself even if you are lacking in capital or business experience.
    • Get a head start. Compared to normal start-up companies, franchises provide a head start to the business owner by providing support on an as-needed basis. A common saying in the franchise industry is “You’re in business for yourself, but not by yourself.”
    • Gain additional training and assistance. Franchises have a vested interest in your Success. As a result, many offer extended training and assistance with business set-up, personnel training, site selection, lease negotiation, collective buying power, and advertising.

    SUMMER TIME FRANCHISING IDEAS

    June 8th, 2008

Summer time can be the perfect opportunity to start some useful franchises. During this time your routine and responsibilities are somewhat pushed to the side and you tend to spend more time with your family and friends and in leisurely activities. Just like you when other people’s habits change their needs and wants change too. You need to entertain your kids on a more frequent basis than school days as they’ll be home all day long. You need to take extra measure around your house to keep it cool from the sun, etc. Here are some franchise ideas I came across on a website

    • Travel and lodging franchise
    • Automotive and landscaping
    • Children’s activity center franchises
    • Restaurant franchises
    • Window covering franchises

Good luck with your franchise and also enjoy the summer!!!

    Benefits of franchising

    June 2nd, 2008

Imagine a life where you got to keep your job and spend time with your family too? I mean, I always used to wonder ‘Can one really have the cake and eat it too’. By ‘cake’ I refer to the proverbial work life balance. Being a mom is no small feat – multitasking gains a whole new meaning once you’re a mom. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get to have a steady flow of income!

I have been into franchising for the last 3 years now and I can say for a fact that it has helped me in more ways than just the financial aspect.

    • For one, it has given me a sense of control. I get to fix my work timings and the pace at which I want to work.
    • Sense of fulfillment. Franchising has helped me realize that I’m doing something worthwhile and useful with my life.
    • This has translated into the quality of our family life. I get to spend more time with my husband and kids because of more time at hand.
    • I’ve learnt to prioritize and delegate tasks more effectively. Funny how my earlier job didn’t teach me these skills as well as a franchising opportunity did. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m in charge of my business that’s made me do these things more effectively.
    • I get access to ready supplies of inventory, training and support from my parent company. They’re just a phone call away if I need any help.
    • I don’t have to bother with the big picture of the business plan and strategizing etc. That’s all taken care of by my franchisor.
    • I don’t have to worry about brand recognition and advertising for the products and services I’m offering – I’m part of a well established organization which everyone knows about.
    • This makes sales so much easier! People buy my products because they know I’m selling a reputed brand.

    THE FOUR LEVELS OF FRANCHISING

    June 1st, 2008

According to Franchise USA there are four levels of franchises are listed below.
    Master Franchises
A Master Franchisee, sometimes called a Regional Developer, has the rights to a larger area than that of an Area Developer. The Master Franchisee, in addition to opening franchises at a much reduced franchise fee and royalty, can also sell unit franchises, multi-unit franchises and area development franchises and make a nice return on the sale. The Master usually receives a part of the royalty and franchise fee paid by each franchisee. There may be additional income available from distribution of products through the franchisees in the area and possibly even some real estate interest.
The Master becomes somewhat of a sub-franchisor for the area, without having experienced all the trial and error the original franchisor did. The Master franchisee will usually want to open and operate at least one unit (pilot location), for income and use as a training center. Master franchises are rare; most franchisors do not offer them. However, when they are available they usually sell quickly. The income available from a Master franchise is extremely lucrative. The initial investment is low compared to the type of value you can build in the Master franchise area. The flexibility is also the greatest at this level. Click here to learn more about Master franchising.

    Area Development Franchises
This license usually grants the franchisee the right to open a certain number of franchises in a given area. There is usually a production schedule where the franchisee must open a certain number of franchises during a certain period. The franchisee has an exclusive area where no other franchisees can be allowed to open a franchise.
    Multi-Unit Franchises
The franchisee acquires more than one unit of the franchise, usually at reduced franchise fees. The risk is lower because the franchisee can take advantage of the economies-of-scale theory; by spreading costs across multi-units, the locations may be more successful. A good sign of the health of the franchise is if many of the franchisees are multi-unit owners.
    Single-Unit Franchises
A franchisee has the right to operate one franchise unit. Most franchisees enter the world of franchising by owning one unit. It is a great way to get in and understand the system before taking on more units.
Well that was the brief description of the four levels of franchises.
Take care see you soon with another article.

STEPS TO RUN A FRANCHISE FROM HOME

    June 1st, 2008
    • In recent years, home-based franchising has become more popular as a range of companies have discovered that working from home can be just as effective as having an established office elsewhere.
    • Franchisers in sectors such as consulting, children’s services, financial services, computer training and repair, cleaning, pet care, photography and travel, are now actively offering potential franchisees opportunities to have their headquarters where they live.
    • However, some towns do not allow businesses to be run from home, or have restrictions on it. For instance, customer parking could cause a problem should special permits be required for spaces used commercially.
    • Therefore, potential franchisees must check with their local authority to see if there are any rules restricting the commercial use of a property and then decide if it is still worth working from home.
    • If approved, this arrangement can save costs for both franchiser and franchisee, although specialist training will be needed to ensure that franchisees will be ready and able to run a successful franchise from home, as they will have to adapt to a unique working style.
    • It is important that franchisees working from home have in place the right equipment. To make sure things are run efficiently, a desk, stationery, posting equipment, notebooks and other items should be in a set place.
    • It is advisable to have a separate business phone line to keep work and home life apart and if using a computer, it should operate at a fast speed so that more work can be done during a day. The same applies for an internet connection and email software.
    • Franchisees at home must have their office or workspace in an area away from distractions such as children, pets and television.
    • Establishing distinct boundaries between the office and living space will help to make the franchise more professional. Therefore, franchisees with family members or roommates living with them must ensure they understand that they should not come into the office unless it is for something urgent.
    • Having a schedule and sticking to it as closely as possible will also help, including regulated breaks, although franchisees should not fall into the trap of working too long because they do not have to travel to work. This will be counterproductive and have a negative impact on the business, as well as family and friends.
    • Those who are self-motivated and can work to these conditions should do well as long as the franchise they choose is right for them and gives them sufficient training and support.
    • However, it can be lonely at times so franchisees wanting to work at home are advised to develop a network with the company’s other home working franchisees and business owners in their area. These groups can provide each other with useful ideas and vital support.]

Apart from the given needful steps to run a franchise from home, I thought of giving you the top 10 in home based franchises for 2008 according to entrepreuner.com

For instance, customer parking could cause a problem, where special permits would be required for spaces used commercially.
    • Those who are self-motivated and can work to these conditions should do well, as long as the franchise they choose is right for them and gives them sufficient training and support.
    • However, it can be lonely at times, so franchisees wanting to work at home are advised to develop a network with the company’s other home working franchisees and business owners in their area. These groups can provide each other with useful ideas and vital support.

    FOOD FRANCHISE INDUSTRY

    April 25th, 2008

According to getentrepreunial.com the food franchise industry is the largest and most profitable industry. Especially the fast food franchise industry is profitable all over the world. These days more and more of us are conscious about our diet habits, which is resulting in a good deal of demand for franchise in healthier foods. Here are the 10 trends for the 2008 which might be profitable for you:

    • Wellness foods – Foods which are produced with nutritionally beneficial ingredients.
    • New world foods – Native and fusion type of foods.
    • Ethnical/Environmental eating – Organic and free range food products.
    • Ethnicity – Distant cuisines are becoming popular.
    • Water – Marketing bottled naturally flavored water is huge in this decade where there is a reduction in water [for living and consumption]
    • Specialties – Ordinary food made special with various ingredients.
    • Portion control – This is the new found way to reach a healthy diet and lose weight.
    • Constant diet – Customized food products for diet.
    • Provenance – The products must contain details about origins of content and structure.
    • Retro – eating – Bringing back the sentiments of traditional food products.

Now that we have seen the top potential ideas of the year 2008 in the food franchising industry; we can go ahead and see what the threats are and the solutions for them.

    THREATS

    • The Law suit problem – There have been many incidents where the company has got sued because they did not warn the customers about the fattening agents in the food [mainly fast food].
    • Constant change in customer tastes – Customers these days are looking for a healthier choice. So you should be prepared to make changes to your business to cater to the customer’s needs.
    • Low - carb craze – This has affected the fast food industry already. The companies are blaming the ‘low - carb craze’ for regressing profits.
    • Competition – Increased competition is a major threat to this industry.

SOLUTIONS (for the above threats, in that order)

    • A realistic solution for the first issue would be to include every single detail on the menu card, improve the nutritional disclosure and advertise / promote healthier lifestyles.
    • When the consumers want to lead a healthy lifestyle we should be able to cater to that need. Like McDonald’s introduced fruit, a huge range of salads, wraps and other low fat options to their menu.
    • This is a big challenge. You must be able to offer a low – carb substitute for your existing product range.
    • Numerous chains are expanding in order to cope with the increased number of competition.

Overall, product differentiation and new marketing innovations are necessary to survive in this growing food franchise industry. Improvements in store level productivity and profitability will also help.

Implementing new ideas, etc will be the biggest challenge. At this point you will have to solely depend on advertising strategies. Also, successful adaptation requires not only an understanding of organizational change, but also an understanding of the franchisor – franchisee relationship dynamics.

    OVERVIEW OF FRANCHISE

    January 23rd, 2008

Hello everyone, I’ll explain to you how this thing works, before we go into more detailed topics. Franchising can be mainly explained as the right or license granted by a company to an individual or group to market their products or services in a specific territory. The franchisor [which is the company] authorizes a certain percentage as fee to the franchisee to help expand the business. The franchisee is an individual or a company that has the right to sell or rent another firm’s/franchisor’s products.

This is an excellent way to earn but you have to check with your state jurisdiction in case they have specific laws regarding franchising. Most franchise agreements are mostly done on a contract basis. You will have to complete a training program conducted by the firm before you start on your own. And then you will be on the right track to successfully start your own business. This is just a general idea of franchising. Do let me know if you want to know anything in a more detailed form. See you with another topic. Until then take care.

From diapers to a business Diva: Franchising does it for me!

    June 7th, 2007

I’ve always wished that I could spend more time with my baby. And as I see one more day slipping by, I know my baby is a day older. The best thing about being around my baby is listening to my baby cackle and making those oh-so-endearing sounds…I mean, baby sounds are some of the most soul stirring sounds I’ve ever heard. They seem to strike a chord somewhere deep down. And nothing is ever worth giving up on that. None of us mothers would want to be taken away from the joy of watching our children grow, right?

But I’ve also wondered if it is also possible to hold on to a career while not giving up on family time. And believe me, I’ve found the solution. Picture this. Imagine yourself getting to have a job and stay at home and actually getting more time to spend with the family…and when I say a job I mean your own business – entrepreneurship. This is the real deal - be your own boss…no more reporting to someone else, no more taking orders, no more of the 9-5 grind. Sounds like heaven doesn’t it?

Franchising really does enable me to accomplish all that and more. You’ve heard of franchising in the ads, the newspapers and the Internet. For those of us who have tried franchising, we know its benefits. But then there are those of us on the crossroads, still figuring out if franchising could be our one way ticket to success.

With franchising I’ve truly begun to enjoy a work life balance – which wasn’t always possible in my earlier 9-5 job. And the way franchising has helped me is:

    • I’ve experienced that franchising contains a much lower risk factor as compared to an independent business
    • I’ve been able to leverage an existing network of suppliers, contacts etc. which I would not have access to in a business of my own
    • I’m part of an already established organization. That means no more running around trying to get publicity for my products/services
    • The business plan and strategy is laid out in detail by the franchisor. Which makes it easier for me! I mean I don’t have to do the groundwork.
    • All this means more time for my family and a better quality of life

    Benefits of franchising

    June 7th, 2007

    Why franchise?

    June 7th, 2007

Franchising has helped me maximize my professional and personal life. You might think this is a pretty bold statement until you consider the tremendous benefits involved. Being a mom, I have experienced that franchising is great for me. Imagine having all the backing and support you need for a business to be successful, without having to do the running around yourself? Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?

Franchising has provided me an amazing infrastructure along with a steady network of suppliers whom I can contact for anything I may need. The amazing thing is that I’ve gotten to be a part of a large organization that has a great brand image. People know these guys and therefore I never had to worry about advertisements or publicity. These guys take care of everything! And all of it comes with a small initial investment. They chalk out the business plan, the strategy etc. and provide me all training needed for this. Even if it’s in the middle of the night, I can count on these people to help me out with any problems I’m having about the business.

I always had an entrepreneurial streak in me – you know always thinking of business opportunities from the most mundane scenarios. I did try going my own route but I soon burnt my fingers in it simply because both financially and from the business standpoint, there wasn’t enough to sustain success. Through franchising, I don’t have to do any running around, no worry on the publicity etc. With just a few hours a week, I’m able to earn more than a ‘decent’ income.

    Why women choose franchising

    June 7th, 2007

Approximately 4.1 million women own or operate businesses in America

Most people will quickly tell you that ‘Franchising is predominantly a man’s world with little scope for creativity’. And there’s no doubt this saying was coined by a man himself. Why else would it sound so discouraging to women? Contrary to what men think, more and more women like you and me are choosing franchising over other forms of business.

The reason is plain and simple. As a woman, it would be very weird if I said I have never encountered any gender bias in my office. Even though all companies will say they are equal opportunity employers etc., fact is women are still not given their due when it comes to a career. But in franchising, there is no such thing as a gender bias because you are essentially competing against yourself. You need to make more sales for your own benefit. You are in total control of not just your business but also your life in general. That really boosts your self esteem and you definitely feel this amazing sense of empowerment. Something that no 9 to 5 job can ever provide you. The best part is it provides loads of flexibility in terms of the work timings and the number of hours you put in every week. I have found this great because I get to spend more time with my family and kids. Whenever I ask women around what they think of franchising, they usually come up with a positive perception. It’s just a matter of time when women will rule franchises!

    Franchising and moms

    June 7th, 2007

There’s something about being a mom that is so absolutely out of this world. Your whole life seems to center around your baby. When it isn’t changing diapers, it’s making baby sounds to your child, playing with them and interpreting their sign language. I can tell you it’s tough to be a mom and I’m saying this because I’ve been there myself. But nothing beats the feeling of being a mom.

I always wanted to do more with my life, while also being a mom. I wanted an identity of my own, as a working woman and not just as another homemaker. To carve out this identity for myself, I began looking for ways to pursue a career without sacrificing family time. I was in for a big disappointment – no offence to the numerous jobs on offer, but none of them had the flexibility I was looking for. I mean, once you’re a mom, things are not the same, right? Your priorities change. So I was basically looking at a job that would

    Welcome to franchises for moms!

    June 7th, 2007

Being a mom myself, I used to wonder if it’s possible to have a career while also spending time with the family. I mean one always suffers, right? Well, I was in for a big surprise. I learnt from friends that franchising could be a great way to start off on a business while having enough spare time to spend with the family. Besides a little extra cash never hurt anyone!

Whoever said that being a mom meant giving up on a career, was probably talking through their hat! I believe franchising hasn’t really been explored by moms till now. The usual apprehensions of ‘what if it doesn’t work’ and ‘there’s so much money needed’, usually deter moms from trying it out. But from my personal experiences, I can tell you that franchising has done me a world of good. Apart from all the income I get, there’s also a profound sense of fulfillment I feel. It’s almost as if I’ve been empowered to do something fruitful with my life and my time. So all you moms out there, it’s time you explored more about franchising.
