Why should you major in Math?

Mathematics is considered as the basis of all science. It provides the foundation for all the other sciences. It is fun, challenging, rewarding, logical yet creative. It seeks ultimate and eternal truth and the beauty of it is, once we know something is true, it’s universal and it can never be false.

There is something common in students who voluntarily study mathematics. They have a liking to it, have the ability in it and have the passion to learn more about it. If you are a bizymom of this category and you wish to pursue your higher studies in mathematics, yet you could not do so since you are committed to your children at home, why not consider an online degree in Mathematics? You can start from your associate degree and go on right till your PhD. Forget about a PhD, even after the Bachelor’s, the sky is the limit for you.

Let us look at what options are available to you after majoring in Mathematics. Generally, by analyzing the past trends, several paths are identified for you to choose from.

Apply for a job which is directly related to the knowledge you gained. Some of the jobs in this type are Scientific Programmers, Statisticians, Actuary, Math teacher or a lecture and many more.

You may prefer to start a different graduate program in which a major in Mathematics is a good foundation. Higher Mathematics, Statistics, Bioinformatics, Operations Research, Biomathematics, Epidemiology, Educational Testing and Measurement, Business Studies and even Medicine (are you surprised?) include a few of these areas.

Interestingly, historical evidence shows that some of the graduates started up their careers in areas that may today seem totally unrelated. If that is the case for you, never think what you learnt is a waste. You will be surprised in the future, to see that your career has many links to math, although it may not seem like that in the beginning. Even if this is not the case, still you should be positive about the degree you earned, since it has helped you develop in many areas such as critical thinking, logic, creativity, imagination and even determination.

One of the amazing things about the mathematicians is their ability to see the world differently. While they see things clearly and analyze them critically, they are capable of thinking differently which makes them inherent inventors.

Another aspect of pursuing higher education in mathematics is the financial reward you receive being an employee. I’m sure you would love to hear that it is the mathematicians who follow a close second to engineers as far as earnings potential are concerned.

Those times are gone where you had to commute to a university while you studied for your degree. Today we live in an information age where things are done online. The education systems have also been subject to changes in the environment, which has brought about ways of studying at whatever location you prefer. If the suitable opportunity is available to you, why not take the maximum advantage out of it?
