From Legal Secretary to Company Officer: a Busy Mom Finds Time for Family & Career

Tina Beilke of Darien, IL began her working career as a legal secretary. As a working wife and mother, she also found time to volunteer in her children’s school and for the Girl Scouts of America.

But Tina wanted more. She was anxious to develop business skills and credentials so that she could pursue more challenging career positions. Starting at the beginning with no higher education degree, and balancing her job, family and volunteer work, Tina had to muster all her motivation and energy to achieve her goal.

It took her 17 years – starting with a Bachelors degree from DePaul University, and then a Master’s degree from DeVry University’s Keller Graduate School of Management – but Tina has met with impressive success. She currently holds the title of Vice President of B&D Equity Property Tax Group and is a company officer, in addition to being a member of the Institute of Professionals in Taxation (IPT), and a member of the National Property Taxpayers Association, an affiliate of NAREIT. She can also boast of a 4.0 GPA at DePaul, and has received multiple recognition awards from her places of employment along the way.

What is Tina most proud of? “Most notably, I have been able to juggle a successful career, evening education, and a family of four.” She cites encouragement from others and stimulating work and school environments as main sources of inspiration.

Tina is especially appreciative of the pragmatic and supportive learning experience from the Keller Graduate School of Management. “I liked how Keller gave us real life assignments and challenges. [The classes] were challenging, and the enthusiasm of the instructors was superb. They allowed and welcomed creativity and some even offered their specialized resources after the courses ended. I believe my Keller master’s degree has opened doors for me that might not have otherwise been opened. “

Time management skills have allowed Tina to continue with her volunteer activities. In addition to coordinating the annual cookie sales drive for approximately 35 different girl scout troops, she recently served as a task force member to her school district’s finance committee.

Tina has found new confidence and is still looking for more challenges. “In business, I find myself taking more risks. We all know bigger risk means bigger rewards. And I am going for it.”
