What kind of Business do you run? Children's Accessories

When did you start it? Fall 2006.

Why did you start it? Based on a need. Two of our products, Skidpants and Slings, were both created because of a need I had with my own child that I couldn't find an answer to.

What was your inspiration? My firstborn son Elias.

How much capital in terms of resources did you invest to start up your business? Blood and sweat!! I initially used scraps I had laying around the house to make test products and then once perfected, I used sale after sale to continue the finances to keep going. We've maintained a no debt policy. It's not always been easy but it's been rewarding.

Do you have a website for your business? If yes please provide it: http://www.dittanybaby.com

Who are your main customers? What demographic are they mostly from? We have clientelle all over the world. The main areas are Japan, Australia, France, and the US. Our customers range in age and ethnicity from young mothers, aunts to grandparents looking for great gifts.

What do you feel are the basic goals that a business such as yours should reach in
the first year?
Stay in the black! The first year can be intimidating at times as you venture out
into new concepts and ideas. As a creative person I felt challenged by new tasks such as writing and PR. Its important to keep positive and keep your priorities strong. Create a good network of support so that you can gleen from those who have been there. Maintain an steadfast approach to customer service over that first year and a steady hand at creating a solid brand image that people can trust.

For anyone who wishes to start their own WAH business in the same industry as yours
what are your top 3 pieces of advice?

1) Know your strengths and delegate your weaknesses.

2) Know your priorities and always be willing to step back and examine the "extras" that may be weighing you down.

3) Keep going, you can do it. Don't let the bumps in the road keep you from fulfiling your dream!

Has this business venture allowed you to spend more time or less time with your
family?
It has done both. I have found myself on several occasions with much too much on
my plate and my family time being sacrificed for the business. It constantly takes
re-focus and stepping back to make sure you are still doing everything you are doing
for the right reasons. Delegation is a big key to success!

What are the top three marketing strategies that you employed to achieve success for
your business?

1) Understanding your customer / target market and creating a campaign that meets a need in their lives.

2) Contests and giveaways are a great way to get your name out there.

3) Image - your visual aids and presentation will win over a media editor faster then any wording you put together.

What goals are next for your business? Clean up! Our goal for the next 3 months is to go through every stage of our process, every page on the website, every nook and corner and tidy up so that we face the next growth stage with a clean slate!

Where do you see your business in another 10 years? To be a well established, well trusted resource for cutting edge funky and cleverly classic accessories for babies to teens.

Name the top 3 products and/or services your business provides and their respective
benefits to the customer/consumer.
Luxury tights like nothing you've ever seen before...legs shouldn't be boring! Skidpants - the funky fashion accessory that protects little legs as they learn to crawl, walk and play. Slings - going handsfree has never looked this good!

Has your business been recognized in any way by the media or any awards organization? If so please state how you were chosen and what kind of recognition your business has achieved. We have been recognized as the top baby carrier by Pregnancy magazine.

How many times a year do you offer special discounts on your products or services?
When?
We are always wanting to provide an opportunity for someone to take home one of
our products who may not otherwise be able to do so. There is usually something,
an entire line or a selection of products on sale.

Share with us two positive feedback comments your customers have said about your
product and/or service.
"I love my Dittany sling and so does my son! Awesome product!" - Lindsey; "OK, I LOVE LOVE LOVE all of the tights!" - Natasha
