An Interview with Dr. Blaine Clausnitzer on Porcelain Veneers

Dr. Blaine Clausnitzer is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.

Q. What are porcelain veneers?

A. Porcelain veneers are thin custom-made shells that are designed to cover the front side of the teeth.  Made of tooth-colored materials, veneers are used to treat spaces between teeth and teeth that are permanently stained or slightly crooked.  They may also cover teeth that are chipped or worn.

Q. How long do dental veneers last?

A. As with any dental work, longevity is very subjective.  It will depend on individual oral hygiene habits, the laboratory who fabricated the veneers, and of course, the dentist’s skills in preparation and cementation.  There are different types of porcelain prescribed; i.e. some more cosmetic, but not as strong, some more strong than cosmetic.  Each case is carefully selected per patient based on the patient’s bite, habits, etc.  If I were to put some numbers on longevity, I would say anywhere from 5-25 years.

Q. Do dental veneers require special care?

A. Yes, the regular home care of brushing 4 times per day and flossing once. Also, regular oral hygiene prophylaxis (cleanings) in the dental office as prescribed by the dentist.  In our office, we use special polish as not to disrupt the shine of the porcelain, yet remove the stain.

Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?

A. Alternatives to porcelain veneers would be composite resin veneers.  Composite
resin is like a moldable plastic that can be formed upon the teeth directly (in the office) or indirectly (made in the lab) and then bonded on the teeth.  Although they are less expensive, roughly half the fee, cosmetically they do not look as natural as the porcelain veneer nor last as long.

Q. Do Veneers look natural?

A. Prior to any hand piece (drill) touching the tooth, we will diagnostically wax up the proposed shape of the final teeth and work with the colors using the patient’s opinion along in the decision process to make them as natural as possible.  A good dental laboratory is a key factor in making porcelain veneers.

Q. Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?

A. No dental work can stop tooth decay.  Patients still need to floss daily and brush 4 times a day.  Also professional cleanings are recommended 2 to 4 times a year.

Q. What does a veneer cost?

A. Veneer fees can range from $860.00 to $1200.00 per tooth.
