What is a hotel chain
Prior to examining the concept and the idea behind hotel chains and what exactly they are, it's important to have a peek at the interesting aspects of what a hotel is, what its mission supposed to be and how its operations are being carried out. With such an understanding, it's easier to see the value, purpose and the excitement behind hotel chains as opposed to a hotel.

As we all know, a hotel is regarded as an institution and or a service provider's establishment to offer paid lodging facilities to customers on limited time or short term basis. These facilities provided include, accommodation consisting of a room with a bed and other furniture (limited to the product bought), meals on room and board basis, attached bathrooms, air conditioning and climate control facilities, as well as, telephone facilities, cable television, internet connectivity and access plus the desirable mini bar. These are only some of the items included in a hotel room.

Apart from the facilities provided in the rooms of these hotels to the guests, there are many other additions and assortments available for a person staying in these hotels. They come in the form of, multi cuisine restaurants, swimming pools, fitness training centers, spas, conference and banquet halls and many others.

Another aspect that anyone comes across with hotels is the classification . As a result of the tourism industry worldwide expanding at a rapid rate during recent decades, for purposes of comparability and standards, rating systems have been introduced. This rating system takes the form of one to five stars classification where the most stars bearing hotels provide the best product and the lower star hotels provide a mediocre or average product to their guests. 'Some consider this disadvantageous to smaller hotels whose quality of accommodation could fall into one class but the lack of an item such as an elevator would prevent it from reaching a higher categorization. In some countries, there is an official body with standard criteria for classifying hotels, but in many others there is none. There have been attempts at unifying the classification system so that it becomes an internationally recognized and reliable standard but large differences exist in the quality of the accommodation and the food within one category of hotel, sometimes even in the same country. With a proper understanding of the concept, idea and the purpose behind a hotel, it is helpful now to look at the term hotel chain. The term hotel chain traits back its origins to the 1920s where a great trend began which shifted individual ownership of hotels to corporate ownership as a result of increasing costs of building and operating hotels. As the corporate world took over the hotel business, they didn't believe in a single hotel at a single location but a chain of hotels at different locations with the same name but not necessarily with the same capacity and product range. Chain operations of 'hotels allows for efficient management through the use of mass purchasing, central reservations and billings, and extensive advertising and promotion campaigns. Today about 30 percent of all American hotels and motels are affiliated with chains or franchised groups.
