The Intercontinental
The fame and popularity for this hotel chain is an aspect that has been with them since their inception. This is well highlighted through the fact that this marvelous brand of upscale luxury hotels was started originally by Pan Am under the leadership of Juan Trippe. They opened their first hotel in Belem, Brazil in the year 1946. Coming from such humble beginnings, this hotel chain has expanded to operate over 200 properties across 75 nations under the ownership of the InterContinental Hotels Group.

InterContinental Hotels Group is a multinational company which operates several hotel brands. Colossal in nature by the standards of the hotel industry, it is regarded as the largest hotel company by number of rooms where it amazingly operates 556,000 (as of March 2007). The group is headquartered in Windsor just outside Greater London and it is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.

InterContinental Hotels Group in their field of operations is mainly involved in managing hotels owned by outsiders and they also extensively operate in the franchising of its brand. In their franchising operation, they sell their expertise, in the fields of hotel management, systems and marketing. This saves the group from such activities as investment in real property, which is far more capital intensive, requires different skills, and has a different risk profile. Those aspects are left primarily to the property's partners. According to reports in 2007, the group has franchised over 3,200 hotels, managed over 510 and owned only 18. The owned hotels do however include many of the key properties of company's flagship InterContinental brand.
