Luxury Hotels
With the boom in tourism in the last few decades of the 20th century, it was found necessary that there should be a method of comparison so that people could differentiate the good and the bad hotels without having to go there and find out. For this reason, the rating system was introduced. The more stars the hotel has, the more luxurious it is, with 5 star hotels being the best of them. These are what are commonly known as luxury hotels. Well, I'm sure that, whenever you want to stay at a luxury hotel, it isn't just to have a nap and change your clothes. You'd want the whole experience to be at it's very best, or else you would've gone for a 2 star or a 3 star. In such a case, I would recommend that you get a room at the Ritz - Carlton, Shangri - La or the Mandarin Oriental. However, if you really can't afford them, then you could go for the cheaper ones.

Of course, just because it's cheaper, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad. Just try to look out for the following to determine how the quality of the hotel is:

1. Staff
Well, one of the most visible signs of a truly good hotel is the friendliness of the staff. Staff are very important because they are the very life and soul of the hotel. If a hotel has an extremely friendly crew, that's half the job done for them. You really have that feel - good factor whenever the staff seems happy and full of smiles, opening the doors and asking about how you are!

2. Cleanliness
Cleanliness is so important! If you're paying a hefty price tag, you deserve a spotless room. A room with roaches isn't gonna' help!

3. Design
Design more-or-less differs from person-to-person, but there are a couple of common guidelines. If the room has some really uncomfy plastic seats, it isn't good enough. The chair should feel like something that you would buy yourself.

4. Facilities
There are some facilities which are about luxury, but some others which have become an absolute necessity, such as Wi-Fi, internet, cable - TV, etc. If the hotel doesn't have at least these facilities, then they shouldn't be labeling themselves as a luxury hotel!

Leaving all this aside, let's look at some of the best hotels in the world. As far as Europe is concerned, it should definitely be the Four Seasons Georges V hotel, located in Paris. The service is awesome. Looking at the US, the Mandarin Oriental is emerging as a really good one, having hotels with an Asian mix. Of course, you can't forget the 'Old is Gold' ones, the Fairmont in San Francisco and the St. Regis hotel!
