Best western
In the hospitality industry worldwide, today, the brand name Best Western is well known especially due to the fact that it claims to be the world's largest hotel chain with the operating capacity of over 4000 hotels in 80 countries. This large hotel chain is headquartered at Phoenix, Arizona in the United States and further cementing the fact that it's a strong competitor in the North American market; Best Western operates over 200 hotels in North America alone. Best Western is also known for its unique marketing program which utilizes the involvement of Wi-Fi access hotspots in its hotels worldwide. Since of late, Best Western has moved into upscale luxury market by launching a tailor made brand for that segment of the market called, Best Western Premier, which operates in locations in Europe and Asia.

Unlike other chains, which are often a mix of company-owned and franchised units, each Best Western hotel is an independently owned and operated franchise. Best Western does not offer franchises in the traditional sense (where both franchisee and franchisor are operating for-profit), however. Rather, Best Western operates as a nonprofit membership association, with each franchisee acting and voting as a member of the association. Best Western charges a rate that is based on an initial cost plus a fee for each additional room. Best Western also publishes a list of standards that each hotel needs to maintain. Instead of long term contracts, each hotel renews its membership on a yearly basis - and the renewal rate is well over 90%.

One of the interesting things of Best Western association is that, each of these hotels is allowed to have their independent unique identity. However, they must use the name Best Western and use their signage with the option of adding their independent name to it such as, "Best Western Adobe Inn". In the United States, the range to which the Best Western properties differ in product offerings varies widely. Properties in the United States can operate either as, roadside motels, motor inns, or full service hotels. Further, within the Best Western chain, there are some smaller "mini chains". For example, the Best Western Midway Hotels found in the United States is one such mini chain.

Tracing its history, it was during the years after the World War II that this now large hotel chain began. During those times, the hotel industry wasn't so extensive and developed, and most hotels existing during those times were either large urban properties, or smaller family owned roadside hotels. In California, a network of independent hotel operators began making referrals of each other to travelers. This small and informal network eventually grew into the modern Best Western hotel chain founded by M.K. Guertin in 1946.

Due to the fact that most of the locations of Best Western were located west of the Mississippi River, it got the name Best Western. Interestingly, in the year 1964, they launched an expansion in to the east of the Mississippi using the name for those properties located east as Best Eastern. By 1967, the "Best Eastern" name was dropped and all motels from coast-to-coast got the "Best Western" name and Gold Crown, a move that would further enhance an already successful marketing brand into the "World's Largest Hotel Chain" by the 1970s.
