Q. How are dental implants placed?
A. Prior to commencement of surgery, careful planning is required to identify structures such as nervers and sinus areas. This also includes shape and dimension of the bone. There will be a series of radiographs (xrays) taken. In most cases a CT Scan will also be obtained. Some surgeons may require an acrylic surgical stent which is used to place and position the implant. In the most basic form of placement, special drills are used to create space, the implant is placed and allowed to heal. If teeth need to be extracted, bone may need to be added and allowed to heal prior to implant placement. Each instance is unique.
Q. How long does it take?
A. Generally, from the time the implant is placed it usually takes 4-6 months to heal. This usually gives adequate time for healing and bone to grow onto the implant.
