An Interview with Dr. David Reid on Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. David Reid is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Reconstructive Surgery.

Q.    What is Reconstructive Surgery?

A.    This refers to surgery intended to restore the normal form and function to the body.

Q.    What is the difference between Cosmetic and Reconstructive surgery?

A.    Cosmetic surgery is intended to change the appearance of the patient.  This, combined with good patient selection, will help improve the self - esteem of the patient.

Q.    What benefits does Reconstructive surgery provide?

A.    Reconstructive surgery is typically a higher art form than you may realize.  Many of my reconstructive procedures have visible results, so I am using my cosmetic surgery skills at the same time as operating to restore function.

Q.    Who is a good candidate for Reconstructive surgery?

A.    The good surgical candidates are those with an injury or surgical deformity that is amenable to improvement.  Many of my patients have hand or facial injuries, such as fractures and nerve injuries that will require surgical reconstruction.  I also provide reconstruction for burn patients, cleft lip and palate, and for cancer patients, especially breast and skin cancer.

Q.    Does Reconstructive surgery have possible risks and complications?

A.    Each operation carries some risk of bleeding and infection.  There are also some risks specific to the body part being repaired.

Q.    How long does it take to recover from Reconstructive surgery?

A.    Recovery time is variable.  Most procedures require 1 -2 weeks off of work, but a straight - forward skin lesion or skin cancer removal does not result in lost time from work.

Q.    Does Reconstructive surgery leave any visible scarring?

A.    I cannot make an incision without a scar result.  But my training has resulted in the knowledge of placing incisions and scars in well-hidden places.
