Bayonne Dentist - An interview with Dr. Shankar Iyer

Dr. Shankar Iyer is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Care.

Q. How do I know when it is time to come in for a checkup?

A. Timing dental check-ups is like guessing when you will require maintenance for your vehicle?  As the old adage says, Prevention is better than cure, a six month routine maintenance visit with us will ensure trouble free mouths for years.  Our patients who have been in the office for several years love the fact that we stand by our work and provide assurance for comprehensive care.

Q. My gums bleed when I brush. Is this something to be concerned about?

A. Bleeding gums is a sign of disease.  Unfortunately, gum disease does not cause pain.  It is a silent killer.  Patients who come with loose teeth don’t know that they have gum disease becuause it does not announce itself.  So when your gums bleed, it is time for you to see your dentist for  a check up or follow up.

Q. How can I whiten my teeth?

A. Teeth Whitening has become very popular and it has reached homes through over the counter products.  It is very tempting to buy those strips and home whitening agents, but the strength of these agents are not at the levels that we use in-office.  So the effects are transient.  An effective way to whiten teeth is by a chairside whitening appointment followed by a take home maintenance kit that cosmetic offices provide.

Q. Do veneers look natural?

A. Veneers are the next best thing to natural teeth.  They are thin, esthetic and do not require extensive reduction.  Again if you can click on the gallery section of my website, most of the smile designs have been accomplished through veneers.  Porcelain veneers are durable, cosmetic and cannot be detected.  They are also rapid in their results.

Q. I don’t like drills. Are there any other options?

A. If one has cavities, air abrasion can be tried but these days with electric handpieces, the noise is almost minimized.  So there is no need to worry about the high noises of drills.

Q. What can a person do about stained and colored teeth?

A. If the teeth are already stained - you need to see a dentist to assess the nature of the stains.  Determine if it is intrinsic (coming from inside the teeth due to fluorosis or tetracycline) or extrinsic ( outside the teeth - caused by coffeee, wine, tobacco or food stains).  Over the counter teeth whitening agents generally work with extrinsic stains.

Q. How can cosmetic dentistry help improve appearance of a person’s smile?

A. "How you appear has got to do with how you appeal!"  We live in a world where we are judged by our appearance.   Research has shown that the likelihood of an attractive smile  succeeding over one that is not is much higher.  Cosmetic dentistry does not have to be expensive.  Conservative procedures like cosmetic contouring, bonding and whitening can change a person’s appearance instantly.
