Veneers on teeth; are veneer treatments reversible?
Dental veneers are certainly a great innovation as far as the world of dentistry is concerned. This innovation is has enabled unique and long lasting solutions to several different dental problems. Veneers are basically thin layers of porcelain that are strongly bonded on to the surface of teeth; much in the way that fake nails are fitted over the surface of “real” nails. When the term “veneers” is mentioned, people tend to think of cosmetic dentistry, however, veneers are also a part of the more “corrective” dental procedures. This is because veneers are also often used to correct aesthetic flaws.
Porcelain veneers have many “glass like” properties. These properties ensure that veneers are extremely stain resistant and durable. Porcelain veneers are also able to reflect light in a manner similar to that of tooth enamel. This means that porcelain veneers also have an extremely realistic appearance.
However, despite the many advantages to opting for porcelain veneers it cannot be denied that veneering is indeed a non-reversible process. The application of veneers requires the removal of a small amount of tooth enamel; this enamel is usually removed from the front portion of the tooth. Naturally, this means that the tooth will never look attractive again unless a veneer is applied. Hence, veneers are such that they may require life-long maintenance and care. The care of veneered teeth however, is similar to the care of non-veneered teeth; simply flossing and brushing on a regular basis should suffice. It’s also important to ensure that excessive forces such as biting down really hard and the “grinding” of teeth are avoided.
However, in comparison to crowns and white fillings, veneers may be a much more worthwhile investment. This is largely due to the advantages of veneers over other less-durable alternative treatments such as crowns and white fillings.
