An Interview with Dr. Scott McGarr on Porcelain Veneers

Dr. Scott McGarr is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.

Q. What are porcelain veneers?

A. Porcelain Veneers are just that.  They are a front cover made of a porcelain material used to improve the esthetic look of a tooth.  Usually they are used because someone is unhappy about their smile.  Since there is no functional purpose they are considered to be a vanity item.  A more practical treatment would be a full crown which will not only be functional but it will look pleasing to the patient.

Q. How long to dental veneers last?

A. Veneers will last for years with the proper care and dental hygiene.  Since a veneer will most often be placed on the front teeth one has to be careful of what they bite on and how they eat.  A veneer can be knocked off if one tries to bit down on a hard service.

Q. Do dental veneers require special care?

A. As I explained before, veneers are mostly to improve the look of front teeth and since they simply cover the front service of a tooth they are more subject to coming off if the patient doesn’t watch what and how they use the front teeth that have veneers.   That said, if one does have a veneer come off, but they still have it the dentist can easily reapply the unit.

Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?

A. There are always alternatives.  Part of the job of the dentist is to discuss all the choices the patient can consider regarding treatment.  Treatment and recommendations depend on the need and goal of the patient.  As I suggested before, a crown is one alternative to a veneer.  Under certain circumstances bondings and bridges and partials could also be considered.

Q. Do Veneers look natural?

A. I believe that a good veneer does look natural.  Obviously that would depend on the material used as well as the skill and talent of the lab.

Q. Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?

A. No the veneer will not protect the tooth from decay.  The patient has to take very good care and practice good dental hygiene which includes regular visits to the dentist to successfully maintain a veneer.

Q. What does a veneer cost?

A. The cost of a veneer will vary from state to state, area to area, and practice to practice but I would estimate that a patient could pay anywhere from $500 to $900 dollars.
