An Interview with Dr. Kathryn Mutzig on Periodontal Disease

Dr. Kathryn Mutzig is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Periodontal Disease.

Q. What is periodontal (gum) disease?

A. Periodontal disease is an infection that  occurs  between the tooth and gum where the gum has pulled away from the bone.  This chronic infection destroys the bone and gum tissue leading to bone loss around the tooth and finally  tooth loss.  This open pathway also allows the bacteria to enter the bloodstream and can cause damage to the heart, lungs, joints, brain, and other organs.

Q. What are the signs of periodontal (gum) disease?

A. Some late stage signs of periodontal disease are loose teeth, bleeding gums, bad breath, and painful gums.  Since there are not usually any signs or symptoms of early stages of periodontal disease most patients are not aware they have a problem until their dentist or hygienist makes the diagnosis.

Q. Who gets periodontal disease?

A. Anyone can get periodontal disease.

Q. How does one know if I have a gum disease?

A. A person can suspect he/she has periodontal disease if you have bleeding when brushing and flossing, loose or shifting teeth, bad breath, or sore gums.

Q. What do I do if I think I have gum disease?

A. You should schedule an appointment with your dentist or periodontist for evaluation.

Q. What treatments are needed?

A. Treatment depends on the particular problem but is usually very successful at controlling the disease and restoring optimal oral and medical health.

Q. Who is a periodontist?

A. A periodontist is a dental specialist that has completed 4 years of college, 4 years of dental school, and 2 to 3 years in periodontal surgical residency.  In my case, I was a dental hygienist prior to entering dental school.

Q. How to contact Dr. Mutzig if we have further questions?
